Best of 2021

With the current year close to its end, the editorial team of ek magazine selected ten architectural projects featured in the print issues 254-263, to be illustrated on our website. Their categories follow the themes of the print edition, including houses, office buildings, interiors, and hotels.

The featured houses reflect the building trend of the last years, which directs architectural production in Greece towards new-generation multi-story apartment developments, and vacation homes. In Athens, we noticed the V-Lofts Apartment Building in Voula (ek255) by Haris Ghikas and Kimon Veneris, as well as the Floating Gardens suburban house in Psichiko (ek 257) by DECA Architecture, for their original interpretation of their urban surroundings. In the countryside, the Khi House (ek 261) by LASSA Architects introduces digital fabrication for optimal control of construction and a minimized environmental footprint, and the Metamorphosis by Ariadni Vozani in Naxos Island (ek 258) reuses a defunct concrete loadbearing structure to discreetly integrate the new house into the landscape, through improved living spaces.

The recent production of office buildings features two outstanding examples in Kifissia, North Athens: The new Cosmote TV Headquarters by Lianou-Chalvatzis Architects (ek 256), which introduces dynamic geometries and vibrant social areas in a defunct industrial shell, and the redesign of a five-story building by Gkotsis-Serafimidou Architects, to accommodate the needs of Olympia Group (ek 256).

Among the new hotels, we chose Meraviglia Slow Living in Preveza by Block722 (ek 262) for the artisanal quality of its architectural finishings and the great care displayed in its custom-made furniture, and the remaking of the Map Boutique Hotel in Nicosia by EKKY Studio Architects (ek 262), who assigned a metropolitan character to the city’s historical landmark, right near the impressive new Eleftherias Square.

Noteworthy interiors from this year are the Yakafu DIY bakery and baking school in China (ek 254) by KC Architects, and the discreet project by Maria Kardami Design Studio in their Vacation House in Arachova (ek 261), where locally sourced materials are combined with an innovative treatment of natural light.
