The White Cube
The 200m2 residence is located in Kalafatis area, overlooking the sea and Tragonisi islet, on the southern side of Mykonos Island. Its bare white, square permeable volumes create an interesting play of geometry with the stone and water surfaces of the surrounding area.
The master-plan comprises two Π shapes – the building and the swimming pool – that embrace, making the building appear to float in water. The house is divided into two sections: the communal areas and the bedrooms, and the swimming pool lies in the middle.
Through the double wooden entrance gate, a water surface with three concrete and granite floating slab-steps lead outside the bedrooms.
The sitting area, with patio doors to the pool perimeter, is placed on the southern side of the residence. On the rear side, a large sliding glass opens onto a patio planted with cactuses, creating an impressive “inside-out” open plan, where the pool is now part of: a sheltered idyllic place in the heart of the home.
The kitchen occupies the eastern side of the sitting area. Wood, granite and stainless steel, charcoal grey cement screed on floors and walls, along with dark furniture and lighting elements, epitomise the marriage of the contemporary to the Mykonean vernacular.
Three en-suite bedrooms are placed on the northern side of the house, facing south towards the sea. All have direct access to the pool via a linear balcony. White and charcoal grey geometrical surfaces separate the sleep area from the open bathroom. On the western side, the master bedroom opens out towards a private external terrace with a pergola.
The close relationship between interior and exterior was crucial to the design. The relatively flat site allowed the creation of large terraces at the same level with the house. To the East, as an extension of the kitchen, is the external dining area with built-in BBQ. To the West and South, an external sitting area and sun lounge extend the internal sitting area.
