For the first time, ABB has been included on the global environmental organization CDP’s “A List” for water management, thanks to improved reporting and enhanced data transparency. ABB was also included for the third consecutive year on the “A List” for climate change management, placing the company among the top 1% of the 22,100 companies assessed worldwide and achieving a double “A” score. In addition, ABB’s factory in Nelamangala, India, received Gold Certification under the AWS Standard.

ABB received an “A” rating for both water management and climate change in the 2025 annual assessment conducted by the global non-profit environmental organization CDP. The company was included on the “A List” for its performance in climate change management and, for the first time, achieved the same distinction for water stewardship. With this double “A” score, ABB ranks among the top 1% of the 22,100 companies evaluated.

Anke Hampel, Group Head of Sustainability at ABB, stated: “Being included on CDP’s ‘A List’ for both climate and water is a recognition of our leadership in performance and corporate transparency. Our first-ever ‘A’ rating for water reflects the strategic priority we place on managing water-related risks, strengthening governance, and actively engaging our suppliers in water protection.”

As climate change, global population growth, and industrial demand put increasing pressure on water security, ABB recognizes freshwater as a finite resource and strives to use it responsibly across its entire value chain. The global water supply and wastewater treatment industry is undergoing a transformation driven by water scarcity, rising consumption, emerging technologies, and new regulatory requirements. ABB is at the forefront of innovation across all stages of the water management cycle, adhering to high industrial and regulatory safety standards – from the production and distribution of high-quality drinking water to wastewater treatment.

ABB improved its water security score from “B” in 2023 to “A-” in 2024 and to “A” in 2025. Water management is particularly critical for ABB, especially in regions experiencing high water stress. For this reason, the company conducts annual water risk assessments at each of its 320 facilities worldwide, with particular focus on sites located in water-scarce areas (91 in 2024). ABB also requires all facilities in such regions to complete a water stewardship self-assessment by the end of 2026 and subsequently implement measures to reduce water stress. The company encourages its sites to comply with the requirements of the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS), a globally recognized standard for sustainable water management that addresses responsible water use, water quality protection, and sound governance through multi-stakeholder engagement.

ABB’s Nelamangala facility becomes the company’s first site to receive Gold AWS Standard Certification

Bangalore, a major city in southern India, faces severe groundwater depletion due to rapid urbanization and excessive water extraction. To help address this challenge, ABB’s factory in Nelamangala, northwest of the city, proactively implemented measures to restore local groundwater while recycling the water it uses. The facility recycles 85% of its treated water, enabling groundwater replenishment at a rate nearly 1.25 times faster than its consumption.

Furthermore, through comprehensive rainwater harvesting initiatives, the site has reduced surface runoff and contributed to an increase in groundwater levels of more than 30 meters over the past three years. In December 2025, the factory was awarded Gold Certification under the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) Standard—an accolade that recognizes investments in smart water management, innovation, and collaboration with the local community and stakeholders across the value chain. The certification confirms that the facility adheres to international standards for responsible water use.
