The bilingual volume “Typologies of Feelings: Kokkinou Kourkoulas Architects and Associates”, featuring texts by AriadnιVozani and Yiannis Peponis, was published by ek Architectural Publications on the occasion of the event organized by ek magazine on December 13, 2024, at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. Designed by Typical Organization and curated by Andreas Kourkoulas, Katerina Kourkoulas, and Hannes Livers Gutberlet, the book captures the cultural imprint of the architectural firm from its inception in the late 1980s to the present.

This “cultural imprint” is a vital aspect of understanding the architectural work of Maria Kokkinou and Andreas Kourkoulas. Beyond addressing functional needs or even what is commonly perceived or interpreted as “aesthetic,” architecture inherently contributes to culture. The book reflects this cultural dimension through a primarily visual narrative, organized into five sections: Place, Vision, Stratification, Movement, Light. These thematic sections serve as a reading guide, highlighting the terms and dynamics that define the firm’s architectural composition.

Culture, as explored in this work, is intrinsically linked to a sense of refinement and the evocation of emotions capable of influencing, directly or indirectly, our daily lives. Through its visual and textual content, the volume invites readers to appreciate how architecture transcends mere utility, becoming a medium of cultural and emotional resonance.

The bilingual volume “Synchronicities: The Architecture of Rena Sakellaridou” by ek Architectural Publications, is curated by Ariadni Vozani. The monographic presentation within the book highlights Rena Sakellaridou’s “hybrid” role—simultaneously an architect, a professor of architecture, and an author—with a well-founded theoretical background. Rena Sakellaridou’s introductory statement, “all is one,” sets the tone for the works categorized into five distinct chapters. These chapters explore allegorical titles, navigating the realms of architecture, perceptual aesthetics, and conceptual-mental processes. Accompanying the presentations are brief autobiographical notes, providing nuanced perspectives on various aspects of her architectural journey.

Rena Sakellaridou, an influential figure in Greece’s architectural landscape, is a professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and a founding member of SPARCH architectural office. Currently leading the RS SPARCH office, her extensive portfolio includes individual and collaborative projects across various architectural categories and scales, earning accolades for its consistently high quality, both within Greece and internationally. Recognized in over 26 architectural competitions, her work has been showcased in 37 exhibitions, including prestigious venues such as the Venice Biennale, Milan Triennale, DAM Frankfurt, NAi Rotterdam, and RIBA. Notably, her buildings have been nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award and the arcVision Award for Women in Architecture.

Takis Zenetos passed away in 1977, at the peak of his creativity, having been one of the most daring, pioneering Greek architects. His realized and unrealized projects, from buildings and urban master planning to furniture design, stand out in their visionary approach; his work remains relevant, and it is an object of study among several Greek and international researchers. An early advocate of digital technology, Zenetos is -perhaps- a singular case, as an early member of the architectural “digital generation.” In the light of recent modifications in two of his most outstanding buildings (FIX Factory/National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens, and the Lycabettus Theater), his contribution to contemporary Greek architecture, and its significance, take center stage anew, soliciting fresh arguments.

The recent unsealing of the archive by the architect’s family became the starting point for this collective volume, curated by Ariadni Vozani and Elias Constantopoulos. The book consists of two parts: The first includes critical essays by architectural academics and researchers, who elaborate on their own viewpoint upon Takis Ch. Zenetos’ life and work; the second includes presentations of archival documents by the architects and researchers Nikos Lambrou and Christos Kritikos.

Contributors to this volume include: Tilemachos Adrianopoulos, Ariadni Vozani, Panos Dragonas & Lydia Kallipoliti, Dora Theodoropoulou, Elias Constantopoulos, Nikos Lambrou, Giorgos Tzirtzilakis, Panayiotis Tournikiotis, Kostas Tsiambaos; the opening note is by the architect’s daughter, Elina Zenetou.

This book publication presents to the Greek public for the first time – with plans, models and photographs – the successive design studies for the Athens Conservatoire, which as “Music Academy”, was one of the buildings Ioannis Despotopoulos had included in his Cultural Centre composition and the only one which ultimately materialised. Some forty years after its partial completion and operation, the Conservatoire, distant and enigmatic within the urban fabric of the capital, remains paradoxically unpublished in the specialised architectural press, where only few of its drawings and photos have surfaced. The publication corresponds to a new cycle of interest in the work of Despotopoulos that has recently opened and includes research papers in universities in Greece and abroad, publications and lectures.

The three residences designed and realized by Nicos Valsamakis in the early 1960s, briefly signal the modernization phase of contemporary Greek architecture. The architect’s house in Filothei and the two houses in Anavyssos, Attica for his friends and colleagues, the engineers Alekos Lanaras and Ion Paraschis, constitute a coherent Greek version of the implementation of modern post-war architecture.
