Balancing materiality
The project aim is the renovation of a hair salon with over 60 years of history and roots from Alexandria, Egypt. The business was recently taken over by the third-generation owners, who wanted to modernize the space and infuse it with their own unique aesthetic touch.
Design Philosophy
The aim of the architectural design is to renew the commercial space, while maintaining the identity of the business and create a modern as well as familiar space. During construction, the existing curved false ceiling was simplified and retained, harmoniously becoming integrated with the minimal design of the new architectural solution.
Material Selection
Metallic inox elements and glass were replaced by warm wood tones, creating an intriguing contrast with the black metallic details. Additionally, the white walls provide an ideal background for highlighting the various hair products. Finally, the reception furniture is clad with green Tinos marble, adding a subtle luxury to the space and becoming a reference to the old “aristocratic” Athens.
Lighting Design
Particular emphasis was placed on the interior lighting, tailored to meet the demands of a professional hair salon, while at the same time creating a relaxing environment for the customers. Linear lighting fixtures and warm-coloured LED strips are chosen for the general lighting, while hidden LED strips are installed in the reception furniture as well as on the display shelves to highlight the array of products.
