Cultural Buildings

The British press reports that the new library buildings in European capitals, of special architectural interest, are highly visited places and modern landmarks of the cities. However, in the age of the internet, with direct electronic access to important libraries worldwide, how is it possible for the physical space of to gain such popularity?

The answer is simple: The physical space will always surpass the digital one, as it allows the joy of interaction. These newly constructed, publicly oriented buildings serve not only as lending or reading libraries but primarily as cultural spaces, meeting points, places for exchanging views, and as educational venues. Their architectural programs also include commercial uses, such as small shops, restaurants, and cafes. With a plethora of events, workshops, lectures, they invite citizens not only to indulge in knowledge but also to participate in a kind of small community. Their success reflects widely in the neighborhood where they are located, and in the city. Certainly, operational success is not only a challenge for the private or public entity that implements them but also a strategic choice of the city that welcomes and ultimately supports them.

A recent publication in the Greek press informs about the imminent loss of a cultural space in the periphery, with a remarkable history and heritage: It is the Center of Mediterranean Architecture, the famous KAM, housed in the Great Arsenal since 2002, when the restoration works in the old harbor of Chania were complete. Dynamically active since its early years of operation, with Dimitris Antonakakis as director, it became a magnet for many architects and academics from all over Greece and abroad. With its exhibitions, conferences, and events, it contributed to the promotion of the art of architecture in the Mediterranean and served as an active cultural center for the residents and visitors of the city. It was definitely a strategic decision, focusing on culture and heritage, and an award-winning architectural restoration project that adorns the city to this day. Are there similar strategies – particularly in cities of the Greek periphery – at this present time?
