Echo, the exhibition concept for Design Shanghai by architects Orproject, has been designed as the physical manifestation of the sounds which surround us. The curator of the exhibition, Degeng Li, assembled a collection of fragments of the city: designed elements such as signage, building facades or visual information. Those are like windows into the world which surrounds us and they connect with each other to form the whole. With Echo, the display installation which presents those fragments, Orproject created a structure which connects those windows into the city with a continuous surface. The architects used digital acoustic analysis techniques to turn the sound of the city, which constantly surrounds us, into a physical volume. The resulting structure forms the backdrop of the exhibition just as the sound forms the backdrop to the city. It connects adjacent exhibits with each other, but it also forms connections between objects at other ends of the exhibition. It makes the visitor aware of how the city is built up of various layers of objects, structures and information.
