Eight Station’s Workflow for Green Theory

When Green Theory set out to update its furniture catalog, the scope was ambitious: more than 450 photorealistic product images covering 150 outdoor furniture designs. For most studios, such a task would require months of production, endless revisions, and the constant risk of inconsistency. Vancouver-based studio Eight Station saw it as an opportunity to rethink the rendering process from the ground up.

The key was treating workflow design as seriously as visual design. Instead of relying on scattered folders and email chains, the team moved client collaboration into Figma. The platform, more commonly used for interface design, became a central hub where Green Theory could view, comment, and approve visuals in real time -cutting review cycles dramatically.

On the production side, a two-pass rendering method was introduced to maintain consistent shadows and lighting across hundreds of images. They also built a tailored material library by scanning actual finishes at Green Theory’s factory, ensuring powder-coat colors, wood grains, and stainless steel textures looked true to life. For stainless steel, they solved tricky reflection issues using Corona Ray Switch Materials, keeping the surfaces realistic without unwanted artifacts.

Automation played its part too. Photoshop scripts handled repetitive tasks, while an organized Google Drive structure ensured no assets were lost along the way. By combining technical precision with efficient systems, the team transformed what could have been a stressful, drawn-out process into a streamlined and scalable workflow.

The result was a complete catalog of consistent, high-quality visuals delivered on time. More than a rendering project, the collaboration demonstrated how process innovation can unlock creativity at scale. For studios tackling similar challenges, Eight Station’s work is a reminder that the future belongs to those who merge artistry with smart, systematic workflows.

The new book by WORKac

Buildings for People and Plants, the new book by Amale Andraos and Dan Wood of WORKac, showcases ten projects by the New York City-based firm in depth, navigating through the interconnected realms of architecture, environment, and social sustainability primarily through photographs and drawings. Published by Park Books, this volume offers a thoughtfully curated selection of recently completed buildings -including the North Boulder Library, the Rhode Island School of Design’s Student Success Center, and the Miami Museum Garage- that illustrate how WORKac’s architecture engages with specific cultural and environmental contexts to support communities of both people and plants. The projects are introduced through a series of lush photographs, followed by colorful axonometric drawings and brief texts in a section titled “Drawings and Stories.”

“We don’t think of buildings as isolated objects. Rather, we enlist their power to frame, reexamine and re-invent relationships -between citizens and cities, public and private space, the individual and the collective, inside and outside, and people and plants,” note Amale Andraos and Dan Wood in the book introduction, written together with Miles Hardingwood.

The book features an introductory essay by Amale Andraos and Dan Wood, in which they articulate their design approach through the concepts of “The Bonus,” “The Jolt,” and “The Gift.” It also features a critical essay, “Civics Lessons for an Uncertain Future,” by architecture critic Nicolai Ouroussoff (formerly of The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times), as well as a conversation with the two architects conducted by Heidi Zuckerman, former director of both the Aspen Art Museum and the Orange County Museum of Art. Buildings for People and Plants is a unique design object in itself.

The beautifully crafted book was designed by Sonya Dyakova and Tom Baber of Atelier Dyakova and takes visual inspiration from WORKac’s buildings, featuring die-cut building shapes on the front and back covers that give way to brightly colored endpapers.

Conceived as a continuation of WORKac’s 2017 publication, We’ll Get There When We Cross That Bridge, the new volume reflects on the ideas introduced eight years ago. The ten featured projects -all built since that first book- offer, in many ways, a response to the questions it posed.

“When we design buildings, we are constantly asking ourselves questions. Is there a communal or civic potential? What is the project giving back to the city? Who is it for, and can we make it more inclusive? Does it do something for the environment? How can we add meaning or texture or depth? We push every project to do something extra, to make “one plus one equal three.” When we design, we are looking for the bonus -always searching for the ways our buildings can be greater than the sum of their parts,” say Andraos and Wood.

This book marks a significant milestone for WORKac, renowned for their ability to emphasize -through projects across the US and around the world- a deep engagement with local cultures, climates, and histories. With this publication, WORKac not only shares their established insights on public, cultural, and institutional projects, but also celebrates their focus on reinventing -through architecture- how we live, work, learn, and experience the world together. WORKac believes in the power of architecture and design to engage environmental and social concerns to create new possibilities for the future.

Against the backdrop of global environmental challenges, the worlds of business, creativity, technology and politics are increasingly converging. Design has a mediating role to play in shaping a more liveable future for all.

For the fourth year in a row, iF Design is the publisher of the iF Design Trend Report, an internationally oriented analysis of global design trends. In collaboration with researchers from “The Future:Project”, Frankfurt/M., the new Trend Report looks at the most important facts and trends that are shaping the present of design and makes them comprehensible using current best practice examples from the iF DESIGN AWARD 2025.

The iF Design Trend Report 2025 is a valuable resource for anyone working in the fields of product, innovation or strategy – a cornucopia of trends, case studies and food for thought that will influence the way we design in the coming years. Interviews with designers from ten countries provide valuable insights and perspectives on the topics. The most important key learnings are concisely summarized at the end of each chapter. The report can be explored interactively and supports flexible reading behavior.

The Trend Report 2025 focuses on six major transformations in our society:

Human Digitality

Design promotes the interaction between people and technology in a more networked society. The more complex the technologies, the greater the demands on the interfaces between products and services, as demonstrated by the use of generative AI and robotics.

Conscious Economy

Design helps to create more empathetic interaction in companies. Values and social developments are increasingly shaping strategies in companies, which are also inspired by design methods. Soft skill sets are becoming a decisive factor within HR and recruiting, and job crafting should free employees from passivity.

Co-Society

Design to promote togetherness in an increasingly fragmented and polarized society. Wealth is reinterpreted in the Quiet Luxury trend and used for more economic and social justice. Sustainable products impress with carefully selected materials. Two opposing trends can be identified: Individualization versus a culture of “we”.

Eco Transition

Design accelerates transformations towards a circular society. Companies benefit from shared resources, reduce costs and increase flexibility. Open innovation platforms and sharing knowledge about circular design will play a central role in design.

Mindshift Revolution

Design breaks with stereotypes. Values and norms, worldviews and gender-specific imprints are reshaped and leave more room for personal development. Mental health is gaining in importance. The mental health shift is supported by universal design and contributes to more mindful interpersonal relationships.

Globalization

Design supports global resilience. Globalization describes the search for a new connection between local actions within the global network. Design strategies address this and strengthen local locations through regionalized production processes and intercultural learning and make them less dependent on international interdependencies.

The new sculptural sink for antoniolupi

The primordial force of nature, an artistic gesture that transforms marble into a contemporary archetype of design.

With Neolitico, Paolo Ulian continues his personal exploration of the meaning of marks and fractures in matter, for antoniolupi. A freestanding marble sink that celebrates the encounter between human gesture and natural force, where beauty is born from a break, an imperfection, a fracture that becomes both form and narrative.

The basin is carved by hand, evoking the millennia-old action of water on stone: drop after drop, groove after groove.

The result is a raw, intense surface that lays bare the inner essence of the material, in contrast with the perfectly smooth cylindrical exterior, marked only by the marble’s unique veining. A balance between control and unpredictability, precision and spontaneity.

The name Neolitico deliberately recalls the origins of the creative act, when humans first began shaping tools and objects to meet their basic needs, leaving a mark in history. In the same way, this sink evokes a return to essence, to the purity of the material, to the power of the sculptural act.

“I have conveyed to this sink a feeling I get while hiking in the mountains”, says Paolo Ulian, “when I encounter along the way those natural hollows carved into the rock with irregular shapes determined by time and chance. When it rains, they fill with water and for me they become the best sink in which to cool off, because the rock has the power to make me feel good. A presence that has inhabited our DNA since the beginning of time.”

“I chose a geometric shape as simple and perfect as the cylinder,” Ulian continues, “which blends perfectly along the perimeter edges with the irregularity of the split-worked stone bowl. Two contrasting finishes that come together in a casual formal fusion that is precisely why it is perfect”.

Neolitico by Paolo Ulian for antoniolupi is a manifesto of emotional design, capable of merging art, nature and innovation. A timeless object that tells the story of human evolution through the transformation of stone.

An architectural firm in Kypseli embraces the idea that authenticity and imperfections are what make a place truly unique.

“Stay Perfectly Imperfect”: A&M Architects invites us to the heart of Kypseli, the neighborhood where the firm was founded, to remind us that it’s the imperfections, not perfection, that make a place truly unique.

Set against the backdrop of Kypseli’s most iconic spots, the film captures the vibrant contrasts of Athens. From the bustling apartment buildings and lively square to the vibrant market and historic municipal market, Kypseli is depicted as it is: a neighborhood teeming with life, defined by its flaws and distinctive character.

A visitor’s first impression of Athens might be that of a gray, untidy, and perhaps neglected city. Yet, it is the spirit of its people that brings color, warmth, and hope to its streets. This is not an Athens striving for perfection but a city in constant evolution, shaped by its imperfections. These flaws give it character, authenticity, and a vibrancy born from the lives of its residents. A&M’s video celebrates the genuine energy and humanity that define our spaces and communities, encouraging us to find beauty in the unexpected. Perfection isn’t what we need—it’s the imperfections that make us truly unique.

Documenting the “skin” of Athenian Buildings

“Artificiel” is the colloquial name of the hand-crafted sculpting technique on cement facing, covering the ubiquitous polykatoikia mid-20th Century apartment buildings in Athens. A result of great skill and craftsmanship by the pelekanoi construction artisans, the technique became obsolete in the 1970ies and is currently in danger of having its material traces lost forever: New energy efficiency regulations will see the gradual scrapping of those sculpted cement surfaces, to be replaced with external thermal insulation. This will be a significant loss to the look and feel of the city. Athens-based designer Yiannis Ghikas documented polykatoikia building facades throughout the center of Athens with a 3d-scanner and molded their signature patterns on a new collection of porcelain ware, produced by Myran Scandinavian Design.

Yiannis Ghikas on his design

“Walking the streets of Athens, one will observe that most buildings constructed between 1950 and 1970 are dressed in surfaces of chased cement facing, a technique colloquially known as Artificiel. This “skin” of the city, at places well-preserved, but most often, visibly worn or poorly preserved, caught my attention since quite some time. The scale of application of this technique in Athenian buildings is so ubiquitous that, if there were one texture to stand as signature feature of the city, it would be the texture of those artificiel. If I had to choose one characteristic trait of Athens to incorporate in my design work, then I would clearly choose artificiel; which is what I did.”

Using photogrammetry, we scanned three basic types of artificiel (fine/chténi, medium/thrapína, coarse/koutaliá) on three urban buildings, in the districts of Kypseli and Kolonaki. We used the digital reliefs to build 3d models of the objects which, when printed, formed the base for the construction of the molds where porcelain is cast.

Myran on the collaboration

When Yiannis Ghikas showed us the new project he was working on after coming back from his residency in Arita in Japan, it was love at first sight. Having worked for two decades with Scandinavian and Japanese Design in Greece, we couldn’t have found a better way of expressing our aesthetic bipolarness than this ceramic celebration of Athens, combining the subtleness of Japanese craft with the gritty diamond of the Athenian facades.

This is the first time that a five-star hotel chooses to cater to the demanding, millennial audience, in such a straightforward manner. Onoma Hotel in Thessaloniki is a technologically flexible hotel, in tune with the contemporary traveler: Millennials control their lives through their smartphones and they are used to everything adapting to their personal interests. The technologically flexible hotel does the same and has “personalised smart staying” as its main concept.

An Original Hospitality Concept.

Through a fresh, pioneering hospitality concept relying on the digital experience, the hotel celebrates contemporary design and new hotel branding trends, to create a new experience of interaction with the visitor. Its architecture is signed by Makridis Associates (interior) and Kouloukouris Associates (exterior); the overall concept bears the mark of Hyper Tria creative agency.

Hotel Design for the Instagram Generation

Onoma Hotel is dotted with “instagrammable” spots, neon signs, and street art, inviting the visitors to share on their social feed. The entrance is marked by two L-shaped LED screens, featuring videos and images. The hidden gem of the building is the illusion basketball court, designed in anamorphic street art style. Entering the lobby, guests are confronted with the Seeker – an iconic statue, representative of the contemporary traveler seeking new experiences, a photo booth for instant social feed uploads, and a vertical garden at the secret backyard.

The rooms are transformed into personalized experience stage sets. The visitor can upgrade to different concepts, turning the room into an experience area for Gaming, Wine Tasting, Street Basketball, Rock Music Bands. The digital interface includes smartphone lock-unlock, ambience control through tablet, and wireless charging.

The Importance of Branding in Hotel Design

To create the Onoma Hotel, Hyper Tria worked on many levels. Its main assignments were: Hotel concept, naming, brand strategy, logo & visual identity, brand manual, guest experiences, hotel guest app design, gamification design, facilities naming and logos, menus design, environmental branding, signage, merchandise design, and website design and development. All was developed through the hyper branding algorithmic concept.

Chemin des Carrières, the Quarries’ Track, is a lace undulating in the landscape, an invitation to travel as our ambition behind the reconquest of the Rosheim-St Nabor railway in Alsace, France. Ominous, sometimes hidden, the vestiges of the railway still mark the reading of the site. The desire to create a route to serve the quarries had to adapt to the undulating landscapes of the sub-Vosges hills and the very form of the tracing tells the history of the landscape and the men. The journey to discover forgotten landscapes or to take a different view on everyday landscapes is addressed to both local users and tourists. Like the old track that offered a dual function (industrial and passenger transport), the route has a double vocation where the functional must rub shoulders with the imaginary of travel. Along the 11km path goes a story, which the stops split into five chapters of different sequences of landscapes offering varied universes and highlighting remarkable sites. Unusual elements punctuate the way, aiming at awakening the visitor’s senses, and water is encountered repeatedly.

Rosheim tells the story of the past. Realized by intertwined circles in Corten steel, the pavilion has a labyrinthine character and play with irregular concave and convex interiors, which the visitors are free to roam. The train tracks are conserved in that area, benches are built, and openings are created to open or close the sculpture to chosen views of the surrounding landscape allowing for viewing, seating – reflexion and contemplation.

Boersch tells the story of water. The river, which historically allowed connection to the world and tells about the true cleanliness of a place. It is a dynamic element in the landscape, running to the ocean. We enlarge the riverbed and build a large open space amphitheater to access the water.

Leonardsau tells the story of the land. After a long green tunnel, two large corten steel plates amplify the opening effect at the end of the forest corridor to the open landscape, embodying a gate and opening a perspective towards Mont St-Odile, which develops the idea of discovery. Ottrott tells the story of travel. Former train station, the stop materializes the history of the railway and highlight the presence of the heritage (balance, bridge, crane, pump…). In a fabric of housing buildings, the reservoir, symbolizing water, and concrete crossings connect housing to historical elements and landscape.

Moving Dunes is inspired by the early arts. It is an extension of the temporary exhibit From Africa to the Americas: Face-to-face Picasso, Past and Present, at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA). The plastic approach of cubist painters questions the role of perspective in visual representation. Anamorphosis, which is the distortion of the subject reconfiguring itself according to the position of the body in space, is one of the methods used. Through this process, Moving Dunes introduces the public to the essence of this approach in a playful way.

By manipulating the street surface, large ripples are generated, recalling the features of a body or a face. Reflective spheres and geometric shapes amplify patterns and multiply points of view. As the observer moves, the street transforms, shapes are reversed, the ground comes alive and destabilizes. Moving Dunes is an experiential mirage in the heart of Downtown Montreal. Along the way, the passer-by discovers the presence of spheres reflecting the different buildings of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, all unique in their architecture and history. Moving Dunes brings together the real and the virtual worlds and awakens the senses.

The MMFA animated the pedestrian area of avenue Du Musée, which has become a must-see for citizens and tourists alike. The goal was to pedestrianize the street and to create a temporary signature layout. Among the challenges encountered were the development of a concept in relation to the theme of the exhibition, the activation of a pedestrian public space while allowing the passage of emergency vehicles, and the creation of an experience with high media impact on a limited budget.

Celebrating the opening of the recently renovated Pavillon Le Corbusier in Zurich, an educational workshop for children and adults took place from June 2019 until September; its objective was to familiarize the public with the expressive potential of standardized components.

The Pavilion design, which is the last built work by Le Corbusier, was informed by the Modulor system of measurements, that involves two series of standardized lengths corresponding to the dimensions of the human body; those lengths are harmoniously correlated upon the same rhythm, in a way that their random combinations produce respectively harmonic, rhythmical results.

The workshop introduced a series of wooden stamps, designed by Kostis Sotirakos; they are a graphic adaptation of the building’s structural elements. The stamp dimensions conform to the Modulor units and they can be combined in countless ways.

The new Rippling table is inspired by ripples that become waves. A drop of water in a lake will generate small waves that expand across the water in a beautiful pattern, a pattern of rings that gradually returns to be one with the calm water again.

The rippling table is made of steel structure which gives it stability and strength while the high quality glass resin creates a scratch free surface. With a diameter of 1.50 cm and height of 76 cm the rippling table will seat comfortably 8 people around its curvature with a steel ring protecting the small resign ripple effect on the end of the table.

Drawn from a correlation between lighting and jewellery, Arrangements is a modular system of geometric light elements in painted matt black aluminium that can be combined in different ways, creating multiple poetic compositions into individual chandeliers. Each unit simply attaches onto the previous one as if resting, balancing perfectly as part of a glowing chain.

A dovetail joint easily allows the intersection of one element into the other. Units are connected electrically and mechanically through a cutting edge technical component, specifically customized and certificated for Arrangements, that allow the continuous power source run throughout the entire chain. Each combination can be changed any time, with a different order, type or quantity of elements, with no need of technical assistance.
Flos partnered with the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens to create an exclusive installation of Arrangements, designed by Michael Anastassiades and curated by Afroditi Gonou and Atalanti Martinou.

Along with the project that fills the museum’s foyer and Cycladic Cafè with light, a public lecture by Michael, on the subject of ‘Working with Light’, was scheduled on Thursday 17th January at the Cycladic Auditorium.

The imaginative table, presented by Yoni alter and Mousarris, has dimensions 60cm x 60cm x 45cm and is available in 25 pieces.

In the fashion of mechanically minded, artisan inventor Leonardo da Vinci, the theme revolves around of intricate gear components, along with magnifiers that are used to intensify the light sources to mirrors, that can then redirect the light to the wall or floor.
After extensive historical research, prototyping and development, and using the latest in lighting, machining, and metalwork technology, the lighting collection brings the Italian Renaissance back to life, in avant-garde form.

The feature piece, Leonardo 1482, poetically resembles a rising sun, borrowing heavily from Renaissance-era mechanics, and is appropriately named for the year Leonardo da Vinci began designing and developing his inventions.

The Vitruvian Table Lamp complements the 1482, with correlating expression. In honour of Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man, the Table Lamp speaks to the geometric purity and deconstructed anatomy this series reveals.

To complete the collection, the Infinity 1519 is an avant-garde luminaire symbolising a setting sun, as 1519 was the year Da Vinci passed away. The ringed capsule has a seemingly endless horizon, so the sightline is infinite. It can be displayed as a hanging pendant or suspended within a half-moon table lamp.

The JACOB’S LADDER sculpture by Gerry Judah, is 34m high and weighs 46 tonnes. It is made from 480 parts of square-sectioned steel tubes, stacked one on top of each other. Each layer is slightly different in length and size, shifted and rotated relative to the layer below, ultimately producing the final gracefully curving shape—this despite the components themselves all being straight steel sections.

Gibbs Farm is a thousand-acre open-air sculpture park in Kaipara Harbour, near Auckland on the North Island of New Zealand. It features over thirty monumental sculptures from a roll-call of top international contemporary artists including Richard Serra, Anish Kapoor and Andy Goldsworthy.

All works are commissioned by Alan Gibbs, a New Zealand businessman, entrepreneur and art collector who has been assembling the Gibbs Farm collection for 26 years.

Midas Chandelier is an iconic assemblage of modern design and minimalist form exuding a contemporary refinement.
The globes’ richly textured artisanal glass surfaces in layers of gold leaves create transitions between the opaque and the transparent, building a sophisticated light play.
The simplicity and modernity of the form with its clean architectural structure details combine with the traditional gilding technique to create a timeless piece in brass, glass and gold leafs, with skilled craftsmanship and sensitivity.
The chandelier, hand crafted by artisans and made of 11 hand blown glass globes with gold leaf gilding to create outer space, in an aged brass structure, adds spirit and dimension to any space.

The large-scale wall art is made of individual 30x30cm and 0.7mm thick high-endurance, light-weight aluminium panels, covered with unique colourful graphics and topped with a protective coating, which come together to assemble the finished piece.
The graphics applied on top of the panels are handled by print and software experts to maintain their quality, even in huge sizes, with the KirMa innovative process that includes a special protective coating. This combination also allows the panels to be installed in wet rooms or on outdoor walls.
Installation is super-easy (DIY); the panels’ unique manufacture ensures they can be installed with a simple double-sided adhesive tape or silicone adhesive. The modular panels can be set up and customised in different layouts, sizes and graphics, limited only by your imagination.

The main idea of the kiosk’s architectural synthesis was its integration into the museum garden in Koukouritsa, “Evropouli”, Corfu Island, as well as its discourse with the existing building of the museum.
The challenge of the design was the relation of a semi-permanent construction with elements of a contemporary café, to the recently renovated historic building, formerly the country house of Ioannis Capodistrias, first Governor of Greece and distinguished European statesman, which functions as a museum with exhibits from his life.

The created mobile, light structure of 7m2 has a discreet presence in the garden, as it almost “disappears” inside the trees giving a sense of harmony in correspondence with the area in which it is located.
Simultaneously, the proportions of its mild form that respects state a different and distinct building presence with a contemporary and modern personality, creating a new interactive meeting point.
The curve was selected as a basic design element, with dark green metal and wood are used as basic construction materials tying with Corfiot countryside references. The kiosk transforms from open to closed or semi-closed space, via rollers drawn onto guides mounted on the base and roof, that follow the curve and stop at selected positions with levers on the wooden floor. The rectangle layer of the structure’s back remains stable and serves to “store” the rollers behind it during the summer period.
The project was distinguished at the 9th Biennale of Young Greek Architects.

Talos is a unique piece of furniture, a table exclusively created with a single block of solid wood from the trunk of a chestnut tree. The grandeur of this large mass is emphasized through the graceful combination of an asymmetrical metal understructure of triangular legs. It is an exceptional composition of contrasting opposites: the natural shape of the tree trunk and the clarity of the iron base.
Talos was designed in order to proclaim nature’s perfect artistry, enhancing its beauty through human intervention. The wood is finished in natural eco-oil, while the metal base is painted in a simple mat black paint.
According to the philosophy of its designer-maker, handmade furniture is all about finding the right balance between the perfection of the material’s organic nature and the imperfection of human touch.
The handmade table, which can be shipped to Europe free of charge, comes in dimensions 342 x 90 x 78cm and weighs 250Kg.

JCDecaux unveils The Kensington, a sculptural digital canvas by Zaha Hadid Design.
Renowned for providing a range of products and services free of charge to cities and transport authorities across the world, all paid for through advertising, JCDecaux media company invited Zaha Hadid Design to redefine the design language of billboards – providing a unique communications channel in London that integrates contemporary design and digital media.
The Kensington combines innovative digital screen technology with a double-ribbon of matt stainless steel framing a curved digital screen, located on West Cromwell Road and is the first billboard by Zaha Hadid Design.
The Kensington’s high resolution 8mm pixel pitch screen with dimensions 26x6m will provide visibility and maximum quality of display for brands, framed by the (30 x 9 metres) steel structure.
Set in an area that has been landscaped to enhance the local environment with the planting of trees and greenery, The Kensington also features integrated lighting that increases visibility for pedestrians.
According to Project Director Melodie Leung: “Both a civic gesture and a promotional medium, the intertwined, looped ribbon design expresses the dynamism of pedestrian and vehicle traffic movements that intersect at this important London junction, reimagining the billboard as public art”.

Marquise is an architectural threshold to the indoor aquatic facility “Westside Natatorium” in El Paso, western Texas, USA.
Drawing inspiration from the 19th century Art Nouveau entries to the Paris Metro by Hector Guimard, the lightweight aluminium spatial entry structure transforms the approach and experience of this new public building. Gridded curvilinear panels, as thin as 3.17mm in places, comprise the brightly-coloured canopy and its self-supporting structural system.
A two-way Cheshire gradient in deep blues and warm yellows alternates graphically to emphasise the sweeping surfaces. Seemingly inflated by the wind, as a tent or sail, the ultra-thin surface billows up from the ground, where it forms two contiguous seats. The two cast in place concrete elements inherit the compound curvature of the faceted but flowing surface, extending this point of entry into a welcoming social space signalling poolside play.

The architectural prototype, made up of 6,367 non-linear stripes in glossy white aluminium, is on public display for the first time in Bruges until September 16, 2018, as part of the city’s second art and architecture triennial.

The installation is the invited centrepiece of an exhibition of architectural works from the FRAC Centre collection that have evolved out of the computational turn. “Liquid Architectures” curated by Abdelkader Damani, asserts the Triennale theme of Liquid City with lively, fluid-like forms that upend the notion of architecture as rigidly determined and immutable.

nonLin/Lin, an impressively thin and light prototype in Mesh Segmentation and Structural Stripes, will occupy the nave of Bruges’ Grootseminarie, a 17th century Cistercian Abbey. Each module is made from 1mm thick aluminium stripes, and yet the team was able to crawl on the structure during its assembly. With dimensions 10.1m length, 7.15m width and 3.9m height, forming a Y in plan, the piece twists and unfurls along the main axis of the sanctuary, well suited to the mystical quality of the installation.

Upon approach, one can’t quite determine the structure’s depth but by wandering through its thicket of porous branches to understand its scale and depth. Openings between connecting parts filter the light that spills through the clerestory above, alternately projecting shadow and dappled light onto its interior, and creating an intricate experience that gives the sense of floating through a dreamy coral-like structure.

The symmetrical structure of the Salone del mobile 2018 Pavilion is inspired by the extraordinary quality of the Renaissance proportions of the courtyard of Università degli studi, the former 16th century Ca’ Granda, and plays with the fundamental elements of Renaissance style: Symmetry, proportion and geometry. The project explores the potential of the materic presence of wood in a non-typical “building” environment as a structure that should transmit a spatial experience. The installation reflects our studio thoughts about future spaces: sustainability (wood as material), structure and spatial emotions.

Three separate wings gradually changing in height, by simply stacking and rotating 1,600 fir wood sticks of different lengths, form a pyramid-like ensemble. Visitors are invited to enter and explore the cave-like installation with an overall weight of 12 tons. The perforated structure filters light and evokes a playful game of light and shadow. It forms three openings, one which serves as the entrance and two more, providing views towards the courtyard of the university and various other installations of the Fuorisalone theme ‘House In Motion’.

An urban experiment is placed at the heart of Malasaña neighbourhood in Madrid. Three small urban devices that constitute three new urban fittings for Jardines del Arquitecto Ribera public square: an open classroom, an open stage and an info-point able to store energy and to endow the whole assembly with a maximum of 2KW/h for daily consumption by those using the installations. Additionally, a Twitter Machine @plaza_tribunal that controls certain interactions such as the possibility to switch the colour of the artificial lighting at the square, the possibility to make selfies using a webcam or to leave messages to be displayed on an LED screen.

The main idea of the project is to experiment around how this energy self-sufficiency becomes a trigger for activation, promotion and co-management (liberalization) of citizen activities in public spaces. The devices accumulating solar energy in their storage systems (solar panels) are not only designed for individual use of mobile phone or computer load but rather to exploit new collective uses such as summer cinema screenings, small concerts on the stage device, or as an energetic support for a storyteller in the tiered seating of the open classroom. Energy self-sufficiency thus enables a conquest of public space by citizen initiatives, hitherto excluded, with free use of energy in the area of the street and the square.
This results in a new urban pedagogy that brings people closer to a responsible and shared energy consumption, due to the finite character of the accumulated of solar energy.

Beyond Reflection is a 16 meter tall stainless steel sculpture by Lawrence Argent in a sunken plaza at Uniwalk, a new mixed-use development in Shenzhen, China.
UAP studio collaborated with the artist, shortly before his untimely passing in October 2017, on the development, fabrication and installation of this landmark project. The complex fabrication required multiple treatments to the material, with the body made from panel beaten mirror polished stainless steel, and the faceted head, claws and tail made from welded mirror polished stainless steel.
Inspired by the dragon, the legendary and symbolic creature of Chinese mythology, the dragon form emerges from beneath the ground, drawing in visitors for closer inspection. Animated with lighting and mist, the work creates a vivid and dramatic experience. The unique site allows the artwork to appear fluid and floating, with the body and legs of the dragon below ground and the head, back and tail rising above, with claws clutching onto the balustrade.

An unusual interior lamp is created by a Japanese artist with a fondness for bread. Using bread flour, cake flour and salt yeast Yukiko Morita handmakes and then bakes assorted breads, carves out their interior and finally, applies a special treatment and resin coating to make them durable.

A careful insertion of cables, batteries and LEDs into the brittle cocoons completes the design of Pampshade which, paying homage to its French-derived onomatopoeia (from the French word for bread: pain+lampshade), comes in seven pastry types: petit boule, coupe, champignon, croissant, boule, batard and baguette.

The artist urges users to handle the lamps as if they were glass, to not immerse them in water and of course, to not eat them.

Without a stem or sham, Carat’s equiangular and equilateral polygon form is designed to rest on any of its many sides. When in this inclined position, the glass increases the surface of the liquid exposed to air, enhancing aromas and allowing for oxygenation of fine spirits. Each flat plane enables the vessel to stay in position, but the edges are close enough that, when placed on a flat surface and given a gentle tap, the 24 Carat sides will spin on the central cone. This feature is ideal for stirring and releasing the flavor and aroma of whiskey, as the motion simulates the rotational movement you would make with your hand while holding an ordinary whiskey glass. Its innovative design includes details to make it virtually spill-proof, which makes it ideal even for picnics. When pouring contents, the glass is held vertically, and the top of the K logo indicates the absolute maximum volume to prevent the contents from spilling when set down. In addition to clear, Carat is also available is several hues and finishes. The Carat collection also includes a multifunctional wine bucket that can double as a unique flower vase. Carat is handcrafted in Riihimäki, the renowned glass-making capital of Finland. Passing through a total of seven craftsmen and taking hours to create and perfect, each piece in the collection is one-of-a-kind.

This miniscule, wearable translator facilitates communication by breaking the language barrier in real-time; by simply pushing its button travellers may begin to talk, having their say immediately translated into the locals’ language and vice-versa. ili’s microphone accurately picks out the user’s voice even in noisy environments such as markets, pubs, or urban places and its speaker clearly projects the translated message above the background noise. With its integrated proprietary dictionary, processing of voice recognition, translation and speech synthesis, ili outperforms all existing translation engines. Most importantly, ili does not require an internet connection to work. In the future, its docking station will connect the device to the internet to keep it up to date. ili currently translates to and from up to 3 languages (English, Japanese and Chinese) while the following two versions will include 6 more (French, Thai, Korean and Spanish, Italian and Arabic) as the makers focus on precision and quality of translation rather than language quantity. Logbar was named a CES 2016 Innovation Awards Honoree for producing and manufacturing ili, that was deemed to have “outstanding design and engineering in cutting edge consumer electronics products across 27 product categories”.

Launching a new series of delicate brass items, Michael Anastassiades supports Spring’s first green buds to sprout. Through the series of five handmade objects- the disk, the mobile, the clip, the cone and the see saw – Anastassiades captures the first few steps of the oak tree’s germination process. Each item delicately suspends the seed above the surface where it is encouraged to grow. The objects, made out of polished brass, are produced by hand and will be released throughout the year, starting with the cone in April. The brass Cone has the maker’s mark engraved, and the Clip is attached to the glass surface. The Disc keeps the acorn above water and the See Saw is released later this year. The Mobile balances the seed. According to the designer: “A few years ago I saw an acorn vase by Estrid Ericson, produced by Svenskt Tenn. I loved the simple poetry of an object of that nature, growing a single acorn. It was the hope for early spring, especially coming from a country with such heavy and dark winters. I became obsessed with the simple idea of suspending a seed on the surface of water; submerged, just to the right level for it to germinate. All with the possibility of being able to support itself in the absence of soil, that would allow it to stand upright; exposed, all in clear view.”

REK is a bookcase that grows with your book collection. The more books the bigger the bookcase, the more shelves. The zigzag shaped parts slide in and out to accommodate books in the resulting voids. Also the books can be arranged according to their sizes. The narrow spaces are excellent for magazines. If your book collection decreases REK bookcase can become smaller, leaving space for only the very special books.

Echo, the exhibition concept for Design Shanghai by architects Orproject, has been designed as the physical manifestation of the sounds which surround us. The curator of the exhibition, Degeng Li, assembled a collection of fragments of the city: designed elements such as signage, building facades or visual information. Those are like windows into the world which surrounds us and they connect with each other to form the whole. With Echo, the display installation which presents those fragments, Orproject created a structure which connects those windows into the city with a continuous surface. The architects used digital acoustic analysis techniques to turn the sound of the city, which constantly surrounds us, into a physical volume. The resulting structure forms the backdrop of the exhibition just as the sound forms the backdrop to the city. It connects adjacent exhibits with each other, but it also forms connections between objects at other ends of the exhibition. It makes the visitor aware of how the city is built up of various layers of objects, structures and information.

AA Greece Visiting School 2014 (22 September – 01 October 2014)

AA Greece Visiting School is a mobile programme travelling, reaching cities outside the country’s capital. It functions as a ‘satellite’ of education that disseminates the Architectural Association’s exclusive, intensive form of teaching and learning around the country. In 2014, AA Greece VS began its design explorations in the city of Patras, in collaboration with the Architecture Department of Patras University.

AETHYR is the result of digital simulations coupled with physical programming and fabrication techniques. Reaching its goal to design and fabricate an interactive/kinetic architectural prototype in 1-to-1 scale, AA Greece 2014 prototype is influenced by and informative of the urban characteristics of Patras: daily weather data, and the local features of human presence, calculated through density and distance values. The prototype is comprised of rigid and soft parts acting as a transformable installation, suspended in space at the University of Patras. Fabricated with kite fabric and steel-plate pieces, the prototype is positioned 3.5 meters high in space, allowing people to walk, work and talk underneath it. Animated with Arduino electronics, it reacts to external stimuli created by the human presence, as well as live stream of urban data for the local weather. Thus, the interaction becomes two-fold and allows for an additional level of interplay. The form of the prototype emerges from a set of design explorations which are focused on natural movements. Such formations include attractive forces, repulsive forces and spiral forces. The fabrication was completed with the use of digital machines, consequent of a series of digital simulations. It occupies an area of 7 meters long by 4 meters wide. The movement affects the shape of the model in its’ vertical direction enabling to grow in thickness from 0.5 to 1 meter. As part of the user experience and interaction, a series of flickering LED lights are installed in order to alter the perception of the piece itself as well as the area it inhabits.

An outstanding figure on the contemporary architecture scene, Odile Decq has designed many important buildings around the world. With her focus on the social commitment in a wide range of design field, the French architect interprets both public and private spaces in a dynamic, open way, looking toward a future of greater interaction between users and structures. The Pétale, was specifically designed for her architectural creation of the GL Events Headquarters on the banks of the Saône in Lyon, France and was developed in close collaboration with Luceplan. The lamp could be defined as a gracefully suspended petal that spreads a soft white light. But the truly extraordinary feature of this object with an organic form is the way it absorbs sound. The body of the lamp, covered with white fabric, is made with a sound-absorbing panel and the dome that supports it is in polycarbonate. While it is ideal for use in compositions of multiple ‘light pétals’ in large spaces for hospitality and socializing, Pétale also performs its multiple functions perfectly as ‘soloist’ in any inhabited context.

A case of dreams interrupted by a sudden intrusion of the lustrous present; Nostalgia is split by the “gloss” and the “line of beauty of broken”. The cabinet of wonders is a material testament of an aggressive moment of encounter. The result: no transition – just clash. The granite cabinet tells the story of the rocaille and its opponent, the grid. This conflict produces a moment of dynamism, reflecting reality: “The old cases the new and the new breaks through” It all happened in black granite, perspex and mirror. www.eleftherios-art.com

The Baroque tureens were the product of a consorted complicity between mutually foreign worlds, between the east and the west, between what was then known and unknown. Their story is the story of proud aristocrats and their opulent feasts, but also the story of old craftsmen and their ancient techniques, of greedy merchants and their trading plots and of merciless monsters and their vast seas. Their story is from here and beyond, and nothing short of surreal, this is the true fairy tale that we redraw today.

The concept is in the lines that meet and melt from across their worlds, rising in an arc from here and beyond, to a dénouement of wind and waves. In a cape that holds their hope and our fate, these are the pawns on the chessboard of Adamastor. Of mythical distances and distant languages, we draw the adventures of travelling lines.

Gibbous is a modular outdoor or indoor piece. It thrives outdoors as it is upholstered in a heavy duty, waterproof, glow-in-the-dark material. This material will charge naturally by the sunlight during the day, and glow throughout the night. The chair is a sphere, one quarter slice slides out to reveal the chair and this slice becomes the ottoman. This ottoman may also be used as a seat, or as a headrest for one lying in the grass. When the chair is closed, you have a beautiful glowing ball; an environmentally friendly lighting to your garden, pool, or living room. recently won the A’ Design Award at Furniture, Decorative Items and Homeware Design.

A frozen piece of music Anisotropia is an installation designed by architects Orproject for the China National Museum in Beijing. It is based on Klavierstück I, a composition for piano by Orproject director Christoph Klemmt. The piano piece uses a twelve tone row which is repeated and altered by the different voices, in order to create complex rhythmic patterns. Anisotropia becomes the physical manifestation of Klavierstück I, a frozen piece of music. The installation is based on a simple strip morphology instead of a twelve tone row, which creates the structure, openings and rhythm within itself, its repetition happening in space instead of time. Layers of the strips form the wall system, and the shifting and alteration of these patterns results in the formation of complex architectural rhythms which are used to control the light, view and shading properties of the structure. The system has also been used for Orproject’s design proposal for Busan Opera House.

Shifting tones Klavierstück I uses a twelve tone row which starts with the lowest key of the piano. After its first cycle the row gets repeated, though shifted up by a halftone. However rather than translating up every tone by a halftone, only the lowest tone of the row is translated up by one octave. Like this the row remains the same, but its range has been shifted. In the further modulation the ranges in the different voices get shifted, reduced, and moved against each other. Similar to African Baginda music, Piano Piece No.1 is based on a simple row of the twelve tones, but by shifting and translating its range of influence, complex and continuously evolving rhythmic patterns are generated and turned into a floating field of sound.

Structure and light The proposed façade system uses parallel bamboo lamella which are creating the rhythmic structure. The basic unit of two strips is creating form into two dimensions, and becomes a straight extrusion into the third dimension. Like this it gets multiplied into the first two dimensions, where it develops and gets modified in the same way in which the twelve tone row gets repeated and modified in time. The extrusion in the third dimensions allows for a horizontal modification during the development of the wall, which is used in a linear direction similar to the continuous upwards movement of the piano piece. In the piano piece always only the upper few tones of each twelve tone row are audible and create the floating field of rhythmic transformations. Similarly in the installation, only the peaks of each strip become visible and create a floating field of structure, shadow and light.

In January 2010, Heatherwick Studio joined the team leading the design of a New Bus for London. The project marks the first time in more than 50 years that TFL has commissioned and overseen the development of a bus built specifically for the capital. Working alongside specialist bus manufacturer, Wrightbus, the external design has been developed to reflect the functional requirements of the vehicle. A long asymmetric front window provides the driver with clear kerbside views, while a wrapped glazing panel reflects passenger circulation – bringing more daylight into the bus and offering views out over London. By incorporating an open platform at its rear, the bus reinstates one of the much-loved features of the 1950s Routemaster which offered a ‘hop-on hop-off’ service. The new design will also have three doors and two staircases, making it quicker and easier for passengers to board. In engineering terms, the New Bus for London will be 15 per cent more fuel efficient than the existing hybrid buses and 40 per cent more efficient than conventional diesel double-deckers.

*Thomas Heatherwick said: “It has been 50 years since a bus was last designed and commissioned specifically for London. This has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a team to look again at the opportunities for a new open-platform bus. It has been an honor to be asked by London’s transport authority to take an integrated approach and design everything that you see and experience from the outside down to the tiniest details of the interior.”

Designs for the new bus were originally unveiled in May 2010 and a prototype, developed and manufactured by Wrightbus, was launched in the capital in December 2011 by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson. The first bus entered public service in February 2012 and a further seven buses are due to enter service by the summer.
