The 7th event in ek magazine’s Material Matters architecture series will take place on 16 June 2026 at the Athens Concert Hall (Megaron Mousikis Athinon), Banquet Hall.

Material Matters explores the importance of both contemporary and traditional materials -and their architectural applications- through the theoretical perspectives and built work of Greek architects. Starting from each material’s history and its constructional or expressive qualities, the presentations focus on how it can be reinterpreted in today’s context, shaped by ongoing economic and technological change.

Material Matters Vol. 7 is dedicated to a family of materials and applications encountered at the very first level of a building’s “reading”: the facade. This year’s edition focuses specifically on building envelopes where metal and glass are the dominant construction materials. As the threshold between interior organisation and the external environment, the façade operates within complex relationships—of meaning and symbolism, but also of engineering performance. In addressing functional demands while enhancing the presence and identity of a building, it often gains a degree of autonomy as a distinct design object in its own right.

A line-up of ten speakers from the fields of architecture and design will discuss the role of the façade in architecture -through their own work as well as selected projects by other architects -in a series of engaging 10-minute presentations.

The Pritzker Architecture Prize announces Smiljan Radić Clarke, of Santiago, Chile, as the 2026 Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the award that is regarded internationally as architecture’s highest distinction.

“Architecture exists between large, massive, and enduring forms—structures that stand under the sun for centuries, waiting for our visit—and smaller, fragile constructions—fleeting as the life of a fly, often without a clear destiny under conventional light. Within this tension of disparate times, we strive to create experiences that carry emotional presence, encouraging people to pause and reconsider a world that so often passes them by with indifference,” expresses Radić.

Radić refuses a repeatable architectural language; instead, each project is approached as a singular inquiry, grounded in first principles and informed by noncontinuous history. Context, use and anthropological awareness take precedence. Site is understood not only in physical terms, but also as a convergence of history, social practice, and political circumstance.

 

 

The 2026 Jury Citation states, in part, “Through a body of work positioned at the crossroads of uncertainty, material experimentation, and cultural memory, Smiljan Radić favours fragility over any unwarranted claim to certainty. His buildings appear temporary, unstable, or deliberately unfinished—almost on the point of disappearance—yet they provide a structured, optimistic and quietly joyful shelter, embracing vulnerability as an intrinsic condition of lived experience.”

Across his work, site-specific strategies recur in varied forms, allowing each building to emerge from its particular conditions rather than a signature formula.Buildings may be partially embedded in the ground rather than placed upon it as at Restaurant Mestizo (Santiago, Chile 2006), oriented to shelter from prevailing winds or harsh light such as in Pite House (Papudo, Chile, 2005), or shaped through adaptive reuse rather than replacement as with Chile Antes de Chile, the extension of the Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art (Santiago, Chile, 2013).

“In every work, he is able to answer with radical originality, making the unobvious obvious. He reverts back to the most irreducible basic foundations of architecture, exploring at the same time, limits that have not yet been touched. Developed in a context of unforgiving circumstances, from the edge of the world, with a practice of just a few collaborators, he is capable of bringing us to the innermost core of the built environment and the human condition,” comments Alejandro Aravena, Chair of the Jury and 2016 Pritzker Prize Laureate.

 

 

Radić’s architecture reveals its rigor not through formal assertion, but through the discipline of its construction. His work often appears austere or elemental, yet this impression conceals precise engineering and construction. Materials such as concrete, stone, timber, and glass are deployed in deliberate relation to one another to shape weight, light, sound, and enclosure. At the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion (London, United Kingdom, 2014), a translucent fiberglass shell rests on immense load-bearing, locally-sourced stones. Light is filtered rather than displayed and enclosure remains partial, allowing visitors to experience shelter without complete separation from the surrounding park. At Teatro Regional del Bío-Bío (Concepción, Chile, 2018), a carefully engineered semi-translucent envelope modulates light and supports acoustic performance through restraint.Construction becomes a kind of storytelling, where texture and mass carry as much meaning as form.

As the Jury Citation further notes, “To render the qualities of his architectural work in spoken language is intrinsically difficult, for in his designs he works with dimensions of experience that are immediately palpable but escape verbalization—like the perception of time itself: immediately recognizable, yet conceptually evasive. His buildings are not conceived simply as visual artifacts; rather, they demand embodied presence.”

His works are marked by a quiet emotional intelligence, informed by empathy for the human experience and calibrated to shape how architecture is felt over time. His buildings feel protective, inwardly focused, and attentive to human fragility. House for the Poem of the Right Angle (Vilches, Chile, 2013) signifies contemplative retreat, with thoughtfully placed openings, oriented upward to capture light and time, encouraging stillness and introspection.

At his home studio, Pequeño Edificio Burgués (Santiago, Chile, 2023), the residence provides shelter and privacy while maintaining an expansive relationship to the city below. From within, residents overlook urban landscape below, while from the outside, the interior remains concealed behind chain-link curtains. Single-pane glass walls invite rain, sound, and shifting light into the space, allowing daily weather to be felt as much as seen. Below, the subterranean studio occupies a quieter register, as the same walls are tempered by an earthen berm that filters sunlight, brings nature into view, and creates a protected environment for work.

 

 

Interventions are neither restoration nor replacement, rather intentional calculations of scale and use. At NAVE (Santiago, Chile, 2015), Radić reframes an early-twentieth-century residential heritage building damaged by natural disaster, retaining the existing structure while inserting new volumes dedicated to open-ended performance, rehearsal, and workshop spaces. Above, a rooftop terrace capped by a circus tent introduces an unexpected lightness and an atmosphere of provisional celebration programmed with community events, that contrasts with the grounded intimacy below. Previous layers remain visible, treating adaptation as continuity rather than compromise.

This attentiveness to layers extends beyond construction. In 2017, Radić established Fundación de Arquitectura Frágil in Santiago, conceived as both a platform for public exchange and a working archive. The foundation’s collection, comprised of experimental works, studies, and references from other architects, forms a body of inquiry that often informs his own projects. The work of others becomes another layer through which architecture continues to evolve.

Developed over more than three decades, Radić’s practice spans cultural institutions, civic spaces, commercial buildings, private residences, and installations throughout Albania, Austria, Chile, Croatia, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, with additional defining works including Guatero, for the XXII Chilean Architecture Biennial (Santiago, Chile, 2023); London Sky Bubble (London, United Kingdom, 2021); Chanchera House (Puerto Octay, Chile, 2022); Prism House (Conguillío, Chile, 2020); Vik Millahue Winery (Millahue, Chile, 2013); The Boy Hidden in a Fish, with Marcela Correa, for the 12th International Architecture Biennale of Venice (Venice, Italy, 2010); and CR House (Santiago, Chile, 2003).

Smiljan Radić Clarke is the 55th Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize and the founder of the practice, Smiljan Radić Clarke, established in 1995. Born in Santiago, Chile, he resides and works in his native city with upcoming projects in Albania, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

Global connections, new curatorial territories and an unprecedented openness to Contract. Salone del Mobile.Milano 2026 sets the coordinates for the project’s near future.

The countdown to the 64th edition of the Salone del Mobile.Milano, the most important international furniture and design industry event, from 21^st to 26th April, at Fiera Milano Rho, is on: more than 1,900 exhibitors (36.6% from abroad) and over 169,000 square metres of net exhibition space completely sold out. At the centre of it all is the eagerly awaited return of the biennial exhibitions: EuroCucina with FTK – Technology For the Kitchen, and the International Bathroom Exhibition.

Completing the picture is SaloneSatellite with 700 designers under 35 and 23 international schools and universities. These figures confirm that the Salone is not only the most important international furniture and design fair, but also an active and evolving cultural infrastructure: a relational and strategic driver that fuels global connections, disseminates shared visions and consolidates Milan’s role as the capital of contemporary design.

The common thread running through the 2026 edition will be an increasingly integrated architecture of content and exhibition itineraries. The Salone is also embarking on a new venture, which will lead to the debut of Salone Contract in 2027 — the Masterplan has been entrusted to Rem Koolhaas and David Gianotten (OMA). From the interpretation of contexts to the visitor experience, integrated supplies and the strengthening of B2B networking.

Debuting also Salone Raritas. Curated icons, unique objects, and outsider pieces: 25 exhibitors will create a new platform, a bridge between special production and the design market, curated by Annalisa Rosso, Editorial Director and Cultural Events Advisor of the Salone del Mobile.Milano, with exhibition design by Formafantasma.

A Luxury Way will feature Aurea, an Architectural Fiction, an immersive installation designed by Maison Numéro 20: an imaginary hotel that transforms interior design into narration and scenography, leveraging the emotional and sensory dimensions of living. Bringing this narrative together and amplifying it, the communication campaign A Matter of Salone is a collective project that puts matter back at the centre as the origin and meaning of design, translating the transition from gesture to form and meaning into images, and a reworked visitor experience: a clearer and more intuitive wayfinding system will help visitors find their way around the fair more easily, fostering discoveries and encounters and making the complexity of the event easier to understand.

The architectural event “Nikos Ktenas – Topologies” was successfully held on December 12 at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) Lighthouse, to a full audience. Organized by ek magazine under the auspices of the Hellenic Institute of Architecture, the event highlighted the profound contribution of Nikos Ktenas to contemporary Greek architecture, architectural education, and culture. Through a series of presentations, key aspects of his built and teaching work in Greece, Italy, and Switzerland were brought to the foreground.

The symposium opened with a short excerpt from the television program “Urban Landscape”, dedicated to Nikos Ktenas. The first speaker, Panayotis Tournikiotis, Professor Emeritus at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and President of the Hellenic Institute of Architecture, placed Ktenas’s work within the broader legacy of modern rationalism. He was followed by Pierre-Alain Croset, Professor at the Politecnico di Milano, who addressed Ktenas’s teaching activity in Milan and at the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio.

 

 

The influence of the Ticino School on Nikos Ktenas’s architecture – particularly its distinctive approach to the relationship between modern architecture and place – was explored by Rena Sakellaridou, Professor Emerita at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Afterwards, Manolis Stavrakakis, Assistant Professor at NTUA, reflected on his dialogues with Ktenas, offering an interpretation of his work through alternative forms of spatial representation, including visual poetry, the visual arts, and video.

Dimitris Philippidis, Professor Emeritus at NTUA, recalled his formative encounter with Ticino architecture during the period of Ktenas’s presence there, while photographer Erieta Attali spoke about the beginning of her engagement with architectural photography through documenting his buildings and their relationship to the landscape. Ariadne Vozani, Professor at NTUA, analyzed the multiple references that informed Ktenas’s work and the ways in which they coalesced into a distinct architectural identity.

 

 

A detailed account of the educational experience at the Politecnico di Milano was presented by Elena Fontanella and Lorenzo Guzzini, who reflected on their time as students and later as teaching assistants to Nikos Ktenas, accompanied by archival photographic material. The event concluded with Katerina Vasilakou, architect and long-standing collaborator of Nikos Ktenas in Greece for nearly two decades, who shed light on both his architectural practice and his human qualities, sharing personal experiences and anecdotes from their close professional relationship.

On the occasion of the event, ek Architectural Publications released the first edition of the new bilingual volume “Nikos Ktenas Architecture | Topologies”, edited by Ariadne Vozani and Katerina Vasilakou. The book presents the complete catalogue of Nikos Ktenas’s works, featuring ten selected projects documented through drawings and photographs, alongside archival material and an extensive unpublished interview conducted by Panos Tsakopoulos for ek magazine in 2018.

ek magazine, with the support of the Hellenic Institute of Architecture, will host an event honoring architect Nikos Ktenas at the SNFCC in December 2025. Nikos Ktenas, Associate Professor at the School of Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), passed away in July 2022, during the most mature and creatively productive phase of his professional and academic career.

He was an architect with an international presence and a characteristic consistency of work between theory and practice. He taught in the United States and Europe, collaborated with Luigi Snozzi at the EPF Lausanne and was a professor at the Politecnico di Milano, Mendrisio and the National Technical University of Athens. His work, recognizable for its geometric purity and deep connection with the place, has been showcased in important European institutions, including the Pavillon de l’Arsenal in Paris and the Netherlands Architecture Institute in Rotterdam. He had repeatedly distinguished himself in Greek and international competitions and was twice nominated for the European Mies van der Rohe Award. In 2017, he was awarded the first prize of the Hellenic Institute of Architecture for the project Inside-Out in Neo Psychiko.

Through a series of presentations by invited speakers, the event will seek to highlight his significant contributions to contemporary Greek architecture, architectural education, and cultural discourse.

Xenia 2025 | Metropolitan Expo

The Red Spot Stage successfully concluded this year’s program as part of Xenia 2025, bringing together over three days leading architects, designers, manufacturers, investment consultants, and hoteliers in a cohesive dialogue on contemporary hospitality architecture. With high attendance and steady interest across all thematic units, the Stage highlighted new trends in design, sustainable development, and strategic collaborations shaping the future of Greek and international hospitality.

The program opened with presentations focused on the financing of tourism investments, offering practical tools and modern guidelines for integrating new projects into existing funding schemes. The contributions of Konstantinos Pantelis (Anodos Group), Kostas Vamvakas (VK Premium), and Manolis Koutelias (Noisis) established a clear framework for planning and implementing development initiatives in the hospitality sector.

 

 

Particularly noteworthy was the Creating Synergies section, where a series of case studies showcased integrated collaborations bringing together architects, lighting designers, interior designers, manufacturers, and hoteliers. Among the standout projects were JW Marriott Crete Resort & Spa, Electra Rhythm Athens, The Social Athens Hotel, Rocabella Mykonos, Mitsis N’U Piraeus Port, Athens Capital Suites, Anthology of Athens, Homa Villas, Minos Palace, Pnoes Tinos Luxury Villas, Adama Boutique Hotel, and Amphitheatro Boutique Hotel. These presentations demonstrated the importance of a modern, team-based approach in which design, operational strategy, and brand identity function as a unified whole, from concept to completion.

During the three-day event, two major under-construction projects were also presented. Set to open in 2026, they already serve as reference points for the next generation of hotel developments: Hilton Chania Old Town, located in the historic center of Chania, and Serendi Villas in Ibiza, one of the largest and most ambitious resort projects currently under development on the island. The Serendi Villas presentation also highlighted the significant role of the Greek creative community in international hospitality, as Greek firms are responsible for the architecture, interior design, and lighting of the project.

 

 

The Hotel Design Trends thematic unit offered a comprehensive overview of new approaches in hotel design—from sustainable development and green energy to branding, storytelling, and room redesign. Participants from companies such as Vitex, PPC (Public Power Corporation), Daikin, Interweave, Semiotik Design, HUB Lighting & Innovation by Kafkas, Exalco, and others demonstrated how technologies, materials, and creative strategy collectively shape the hospitality experience of the coming years.

This year’s Red Spot Stage wrapped up three days of meaningful dialogue and high-level presentations, showcasing the maturity and breadth of the Greek architectural community in the hospitality sector.

For the third consecutive year, ek magazine curated, designed, and coordinated the program of The Red Spot Stage, creating unified and coherent content that connected professionals across the entire hospitality spectrum.

Xenia 2025, Greece’s leading tourism exhibition, returns to the Metropolitan Expo from November 22 to 24.

For the third consecutive year, ek magazine -drawing on its extensive experience in architecture, construction, and design- will curate and coordinate the architectural presentations at “The Red Spot Stage.”

The stage, located in Hall 2, has been designed by Rena Sakellaridou and her practice RS Sparch, creating a space of exceptional aesthetics that will host prominent Greek architects, contractors, lighting designers, and hotel managers. Through carefully selected case studies, the program will explore the challenges and solutions behind recently completed hospitality projects.

This year’s presentations will be structured around three main sections:

Case studies dedicated to newly completed hotel projects. Each session will bring together the project architect with their team of collaborators (lighting designers, landscape architects, contractors), alongside the hotel owner or representative. This format offers a comprehensive view of the project’s journey, highlighting strategies, experiences, and key challenges, from initial concept to final realization.

The Alexander Innovation Zone (AIZ) invites you to the workshop “Architecture and Innovation in Artificial Intelligence – Opening New Markets”, led by architect Fotis Grammatikopoulos, on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, from 16:00–19:00, at the “Dimitra Iordanidou” event hall, AIZ premises (Filikis Etaireias 12 & Tsimiski, Thessaloniki).

About the Lecturer

Fotis Grammatikopoulos has over 20 years of professional experience, having collaborated with leading architectural firms in the United Kingdom such as Foster + Partners, Grimshaw, Pascall and Watson, HOK, and WATG. He has also taught at the University of Westminster (London) and Anglia Ruskin University (Cambridge). As a cross-disciplinary designer with a background in architectural innovation, he promotes a holistic approach that fosters collective growth and the creation of new business models. In recent years, his focus has been on how Artificial Intelligence redefines architectural practice – not only in terms of tools, but mainly in terms of roles and business models. He views automation and the loss of certain traditional jobs as an opportunity to create a new type of architect-leader, a professional who acts simultaneously as a designer of systems and use-case scenarios, a connector between disciplines, and a creator of solutions for hybrid environments. This transition is not only about technology but also about the emergence of new markets, formed at the intersection of architecture, strategy, and new forms of work.

A Spanish Perspective on Contemporary Architecture & Design

In a groundbreaking initiative for Greece, ek magazine was selected by the Spanish Embassy in Athens and ICEX (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) to oversee the complete curation of “Shaping Spaces: A Spanish Perspective on Contemporary Architecture & Design”.

Organized under the umbrella of “Spain is in”—an international campaign by ICEX promoting Spanish interior design worldwide—the event took place on June 4th at Aigli Zappeion. It offered a unique opportunity for invited architects to engage directly with 14 leading Spanish companies specializing in furniture, lighting, tiles, textiles, and other interior design elements.

Moving beyond the framework of a conventional trade show, ek magazine implemented a carefully curated, invitation-only format. The event combined product showcases with a keynote lecture, focused presentations, and a relaxed networking cocktail in an informal, creative atmosphere.

The evening opened with a welcome address from Jorge Domecq Fernández, Ambassador of Spain to Greece, who highlighted the significance of such outreach initiatives for professionals in both countries.

At the heart of the program was a lecture by renowned Spanish architect Fran Silvestre, who presented completed projects alongside the design philosophy of his firm—a philosophy that merges precision in design with technological innovation to create a continuous spatial experience. Silvestre emphasized clarity, simplicity, and dialogue as core elements of his architectural language, shaping both the aesthetics and structure of his work.

 

 

The lecture was followed by three panel discussions featuring representatives of the participating companies. Each panel focused on a distinct sector, with presentations on product identity and interactive discussions moderated by Stavros Martinos, member of the ek magazine editorial team.

The first panel, dedicated to residential spaces, included Jan Joncheere (LuxCambra), Juan de Dios Pérez Ramos (OgoFurniture), Clara Altaba (RS Barcelona), and Marcos Rioseco Castroa (a·emotional light).

The second panel explored contemporary workspaces, featuring Ivan Gimenez Soler (EcoCero), Santos De Arpe (Actiu), Veronique de Keyser (Viccarbe), and Irati Diez Olazabal (Akaba).

The 63rd edition of Salone del Mobile.Milano concluded with great success, reaffirming its role as the world’s leading event in the field of design. Despite international challenges, the exhibition welcomed 302,548 visitors from 151 countries, further strengthening its strategic global position. More than 2,100 exhibitors from 37 countries presented innovative ideas and products, while the rich Cultural Programme and the Euroluce International Lighting Forum emerged as key highlights, opening new perspectives for the future of design and lighting. Within this framework, distinguished figures from the international design scene took part as keynote speakers:

The Pritzker Architecture Prize announces Liu Jiakun, of Chengdu, People’s Republic of China, as the 2025 Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the award that is regarded internationally as architecture’s highest honor.

“Architecture should reveal something -it should abstract, distill and make visible the inherent qualities of local people. It has the power to shape human behavior and create atmospheres, offering a sense of serenity and poetry, evoking compassion and mercy, and cultivating a sense of shared community,” expresses Liu.

 

 

Intertwining seeming antipodes such as utopia versus everyday existence, history versus modernity, and collectivism versus individuality, Liu offers affirming architecture that celebrates the lives of ordinary citizens. He upholds the transcendent power of the built environment through the harmonizing of cultural, historical, emotional and social dimensions, using architecture to forge community, inspire compassion and elevate the human spirit.

“Through an outstanding body of work of deep coherence and constant quality, Liu Jiakun imagines and constructs new worlds, free from any aesthetic or stylistic constraint. Instead of a style, he has developed a strategy that never relies on a recurring method but rather on evaluating the specific characteristics and requirements of each project differently. That is to say, Liu Jiakun takes present realities and handles them to the point of offering sometimes a whole new scenario of daily life. Beyond knowledge and techniques, common sense and wisdom are the most powerful tools he adds to the designer’s toolbox,” states the 2025 Jury Citation, in part.

Liu creates public areas in populated cities where the luxury of space is largely absent, forging a positive relationship between density and open space. By multiplying typologies within one project, he innovates the role of civic spaces to support the breadth of requisites for a diverse society. West Village (Chengdu, China, 2015) is a five-story project that spans an entire block, visually and contextually contrasting with the matrix of characteristically mid- and high-rise buildings. An open yet enclosed perimeter of sloping pathways for cyclists and pedestrians envelopes its own vibrant city of cultural, athletic, recreational, office and business activities within, while allowing the public to view through to the surrounding natural and built environments. Sichuan Fine Arts Institute Department of Sculpture (Chongqing, China, 2004) displays an alternate solution to maximizing space, with upper levels protruding outward to extend the square footage of a narrow footprint.

 

 

“Cities tend to segregate functions, but Liu Jiakun takes the opposite approach and sustains a delicate balance to integrate all dimensions of the urban life,” comments Alejandro Aravena, Chair of the Jury and 2016 Pritzker Prize Laureate. He continues, “In a world that tends to create endless dull peripheries, he has found a way to build places that are a building, infrastructure, landscape and public space at the same time. His work may offer impactful clues on how to confront the challenges of urbanization, in an era of rapidly growing cities.”

Throughout his works, Liu demonstrates a reverence for culture, history and nature, chronicling time and comforting users with familiarity through modern interpretations of classic Chinese architecture. Flat eaves of the Suzhou Museum of Imperial Kiln Brick (Suzhou, China, 2016) and window walls of Lancui Pavilion of Egret Gulf Wetland (Chengdu, China 2013) reimagine the form of pavilions dating back many millennia. Tiered balconies of Novartis (Shanghai) Block – C6 (Shanghai, China, 2014) are reminiscent of towers representing many dynasties. Luyeyuan Stone Sculpture Art Museum (Chengdu, China, 2002), housing Buddhist sculptures and relics, is modeled after a traditional Chinese garden, balancing water and ancient stones to reflect the natural landscape. Believing that the human relationship with nature is reciprocal, buildings both emerge and dissolve within their surroundings, such as The Renovation of Tianbao Cave District of Erlang Town (Luzhou, China, 2021) nestled in the lush cliffside landscape of Tianbao Mountain. Local and wild flora is featured in all of his works, as bricks are paved upended to enable grasses to flourish through the core holes, indigenous bamboo groves are planted in new sites, and floors and ceilings are designed with openings to allow the continuance of existing trees.

 

 

His honest architecture presents the sincerity of textural materials and processes, displaying imperfections that endure, rather than degrade, through time. He disfavors manufactured product, preferring traditional craft and often using raw local materials that sustain the economy and environment, built for and by the community. The Department of Sculpture building exposes swirling details of authentic Chongqing sand plastering handiwork that are left visible rather than honed. He revives materials—and spirits—upcycling rubble from the ruins of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake and strengthening it with local wheat fiber and cement to produce fortified bricks with greater physical and economic efficiency than the original. The “Rebirth Bricks” can be found extensively throughout the Novartis building, Shuijingfang Museum (Chengdu, China, 2013) and West Village, his largest work. The devastation also yielded his smallest work to date, Hu Huishan Memorial (Chengdu, China, 2009), in the form of a permanent cement relief tent, exhibited not only for a 15-year-old girl in the aftermath of destruction, but for the collective memory of an entire nation in mourning.

“Liu Jiakun uplifts through the process and purpose of architecture, fostering emotional connections that unite communities,” remarks Tom Pritzker, Chairman of The Hyatt Foundation, which sponsors the award. “There is a wisdom in his architecture, philosophically looking beyond the surface to reveal that history, materials and nature are symbiotic.”

Liu’s career spans over four decades, with more than thirty projects ranging from academic and cultural institutions to civic spaces, commercial buildings and urban planning throughout China. Significant works also include Museum of Clocks, Jianchuan Museum Cluster (Chengdu, China, 2007); Design Department on new campus, Sichuan Fine Arts Institute (Chongqing, China 2006), Lodging Center of China International Practice Exhibition of Architecture (Nanjing, China, 2012), Chengdu High-Tech Zone Tianfu Software Park Communication Center (Chengdu, China, 2010), and Songyang Culture Neighborhood (Lishui, China, 2020).

Liu is the 54th Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize and the founder of Jiakun Architecture, established in 1999. Born in Chengdu, China, he resides and works in his native city. He will be honored at a celebration in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates this spring, and globally with a virtual ceremony video this fall. The 2025 Laureate Lecture and Panel Discussion will be held in May and open to the public in-person and online.

Material Matters Vol.6 is dedicated to a family of materials with enduring importance for Greek architecture: Marble and Stone.
The ancient Greeks highlighted the timeless beauty and durability of marble, creating world-renowned monuments. The use of the vast variety of Greek marbles, as well as other local stones, contributed to the creation of a unique architectural identity that reflects the relationship with the natural environment, particularly in traditional architecture.

In the modern era, marble and stones continue to add prestige, aesthetics, and authenticity to both small and large-scale projects.

The honorary event held at the bustling “Lighthouse” of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) on December 13th, organized by ek magazine under the auspices of the Hellenic Institute of Architecture, was met with resounding success. The event was masterfully coordinated by architects Ariadne Vozani, Professor at NTUA and Editorial Director of ek magazine, and Stavros Martinos, a Member of the magazine’s Editorial Team.

Maria Kokkinou and Andreas Kourkoulas, who established their architectural practice in 1987 upon their return to Athens from London, are widely regarded as two of the most significant architects of their generation. Their extensive body of work spans nearly all building categories and scales. Renowned for introducing innovative ideas to Greek architecture, they advocate for designs that are more seamlessly integrated into the urban fabric, utilizing advanced materials and construction techniques. Their contributions have transformed Greece’s urban and suburban landscapes with exceptional public and private spaces. Notable projects include the Generali offices in Maroussi, the Benaki Museum on Piraeus Street, the Shop and Trade multi-use building in Tavros, and the Cosmote headquarters in Mesogeia.

With a dynamic trajectory spanning over 35 years as well as Andreas Kourkoulas’s tenure as a professor at the School of Architecture at NTUA, the office Kokkinou-Kourkoulas Architects and Partners continues to shape the contemporary architectural landscape of Greece with the exceptional quality of its projects. The significance of this remarkable journey, along with its lesser-known personal dimensions, was illuminated during the event by ten distinguished collaborators of the firm from both academic and professional circles.

The first speaker, Yannis Peponis, Professor of Architecture at Georgia Tech, began with a reference to Andreas Kourkoulas’s PhD thesis at UCL, using it as a foundation to explore an office design methodology that links buildings to their urban context. He illustrated this approach through three built projects in Athens, where the design of their entrances serves as a key tool for understanding a broader architectural philosophy.

Nicolas Travasaros, founder of Divercity Architects, shared his experience as a young architect working in the office of Maria Kokkinou and Andreas Kourkoulas. He reflected on the invaluable skills he acquired there, which prepared him to take on equally complex and demanding architectural projects in his own career.

Ricky Burdett, Professor at the London School of Economics, shared a personal account of Maria Kokkinou and Andreas Kourkoulas’s time in London, when they studied together under the pioneering architect Bill Hillier. He also reflected on the enduring friendship they built in the years that followed.

Elli Pagalou, landscape architect, shared her perspective on her productive collaborations with Maria Kokkinou and Andreas Kourkoulas. These partnerships, which evolved into lasting professional relationships, consistently provided opportunities for dynamic and creative exchanges.

Elias Konstantopoulos, Professor Emeritus at the Department of Architecture at the University of Patras and President of the Hellenic Institute of Architecture, contextualized the architects’ work within the broader theoretical explorations of their generation on a global scale. Drawing from Bill Hillier’s research on the social dimension of space and the general critique of modernism, he highlighted how these ideas were applied in the built and conceptual projects that Kokkinou and Kourkoulas developed upon their return to Greece.

Zisis Kotzias, Professor at the Department of Architecture at the University of Thessaly, reflected on his personal connection with the architects, posing thought-provoking questions about the design process. He examined the concepts that keep their architectural works “open,” and, in some ways, deliberately “incomplete,” allowing for ongoing interpretation and evolution.

Dimitris Andriopoulos, Managing Director of Dimand, a real estate development company with which Kokkinou and Kourkoulas have had a long-standing and successful collaboration, offered his insights into the role of all contributors in achieving projects of lasting impact and originality.

Giorgos Mitroulias, Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture at the University of Thessaly and a member of the architectural firm AREA, offered a fresh perspective on the work of Maria Kokkinou and Andreas Kourkoulas. Speaking as a younger architect, he explored his personal interpretations of their projects and highlighted the tools of creative dialogue, presenting an intriguing audio recording of one such discussion as it unfolded in real time.

Architect Dimitris Korres reflected on his long-standing relationship with Maria Kokkinou and Andreas Kourkoulas, which began during their student years at the National Technical University of Athens. He also recounted their collaborations over the years, especially when architectural ideas required the innovative problem-solving of an engineer-inventor.

The event concluded in a distinctive manner with Katerina Kourkoula, an architect at En Route Architecture and collaborator with Kokkinou Kourkoula Architects & Associates. Through her research into personal artifacts and archival material from the office, she painted a portrait of two contrasting yet complementary architectural personas who collaborated seamlessly, both professionally and in their personal lives.

Beauty Interrobang

Friday Matters blends the academic rigour of a lecture, the Intimacy of a friendly gathering, and the excitement of a Friday night out.

It seeks to bring design conversations outside of the conventional setting, and infuse them with a convivial atmosphere, complete with a reasonable amount of alcohol.

What are the pursuits and the vehicles of a design process? Who are the key players in defining a project’s direction, and when do those emerge? What makes a design good, beautiful, sophisticated?

By welcoming guests from various disciplines to share their insights and experiences, FRIDAY MATTERS promotes interdisciplinary exchange, enriching the design community’s perspective. In order to find new ways to communicate our ideas & values, we shift the focus away from our completed works, onto the stories & people behind them. Employing an engaging and interactive format that encourages dialogue and knowledge exchange, we aspire to create a relaxed and informal setting; to foster a sense of community by celebrating the diversity and dynamism of the design field and innovate with the event format to keep discussions lively and engaging, making each gathering unique.

FRIDAY MATTERS attempts to blend the intellectual stimulation of a design talk with the social enjoyment of a Friday night out; to initiate a dialogue on some of the most common and burning concerns of creation. Ultimately, FRIDAY MATTERS aspires to create a space where design professionals and enthusiasts can come together, share ideas, and enjoy themselves, inspiring and invigorating the design community.

Through the perspective of our guest Nikos Karaflos (CEO of Dexamenes Seaside Hotel), we set out to explore the concept of Beauty, delving into the significance of experience, aesthetics and emerging technologies, how they evoke emotion and influence our perception of beauty.

The event comprised three parts. The first featured a physical installation, a curated selection of “objects of beauty” exhibited to highlight the physical and tactile qualities of beauty. Items included a Barbie doll, surgical tools, a mirror, concrete samples, and flowers among others. As guests were greeted into the venue, they got the chance to explore the exhibits, discuss and reflect upon them, and “vote” on their favourites, akin to an auction. The audience engaged deeply with the installation, exploring the notions and metaphors of beauty each piece represented. At the end of the event, the “winner” was revealed: a pair of tall melting candles, symbolising the passage of time, the fleeting nature of beauty, and the sensory qualities beyond visual imagery, such as warmth, movement, and smell.

In the second part, our guest speaker elaborated on his perspective of Beauty, emphasising the message: “Beauty is Values.” Using his personal project, Dexamenes hotel, as a case study, he guided the audience through the qualities and ideas that shaped his business into a beloved destination. Concepts such as rituals, slowness, rhythm, and togetherness were highlighted.

The talk was followed by a Q&A session, leading to a rich discussion between guests and team members that uncovered intriguing sub-themes around Beauty. A significant portion of the discussion focused on artificial intelligence, image-based software, and design ethics.

After the talk, the conversation continued in smaller groups, followed by drinks and an energetic DJ set, marking the official launch party of FRIDAY MATTERS.

The premier Greek tourism exhibition, Xenia 2024, will be held this year at the Metropolitan Expo from November 23 to 25. As part of the exhibition, ek magazine, with years of experience in architecture, construction, and design, will coordinate and curate live architectural presentations for the third consecutive year at “The Red Spot Stage.” The impressive architectural design of the stage has been entrusted to Rena Sakellaridou and her firm, RS Sparch.

The specially designed stage in Hall 2 will host prominent Greek architects, builders, lighting designers, and hoteliers who will present selected case studies of hotel projects -mainly in the sectors of resorts, boutique, and city hotels- highlighting challenges from the initial concept to final implementation.

The talks will be divided into the following sections:

Standalone case studies dedicated to a recently completed hotel project. Each panel will feature the architect of the project along with collaborating specialists -lighting, landscape, etc. -constructors and/or hotel owners/managers.

Exhibition

As part of the exhibition 2nd Nature by Pieris.Architects, held at the Ω2 multi-purpose space within the Athens Conservatory (8-18 November 2024), two thought-provoking discussions brought sustainability to the forefront. These events featured architects, leaders in the construction materials industry, and experts in recycling and real estate development. Together, they explored sustainable practices, engaging both professionals and the wider public.

 

Synergies in Construction and Design: Advancing UN Sustainable Development Goal 17 through Innovation and Sustainable Practices.

On November 9, Ivy-Hara Dikaiou, founder of Cosmos ESG & CSR Consulting, moderated a panel discussion titled Synergies in Construction and Design: Advancing UN Sustainable Development Goal 17 through Innovation and Sustainable Practices. This dialogue emphasized the importance of collaborative innovation in driving sustainable development within the construction and design sectors.

Dr. Stella Pieri opened the discussion by emphasizing the centrality of Goal 17 to the exhibition’s framework. She highlighted that “inclusive partnerships grounded in shared principles, values, vision, and goals -prioritizing people and the planet- are essential across global, regional, national, and local levels.” She noted that Pieris.Architects currently aligns with 8 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals and has implemented ESG strategies, which they plan to publicly disclose in the near future, despite Greek legislation not mandating it.

Vassilis Katerelos, General Manager of Sustainability at Hercules Group, explained that at HOLCIM, and by extension Hercules Group, 9 of the 17 Goals have been identified as closely tied to their operations. He stated, “Transparency in reporting our environmental, social, and governance outcomes is a core value for us. We believe it fosters trust with our stakeholders.” He also discussed Hercules Group’s collaboration with Pieris.Architects and companies specializing in 3D printing technology for the design and construction of The SPOT, an innovative, sustainable building at the University of Patras. “This building will serve as a research and application hub for new technologies, potentially paving the way for more cost-effective and sustainable construction methods,” he concluded.

Panos Iliopoulos, General Manager of Marmyk Iliopoulos, highlighted the company’s longstanding commitment to sustainable practices in raw material utilization, dating back to 1995. He remarked, “Since 2004, we have been the only marble company producing masonry products from quarry by-products.” In 2020, the company launched its zero-waste product line, using marble processing residues to create tiles from marble nuggets. These innovative products have already been applied in projects such as the Viva Wallet facility in Maroussi, designed by Pieris.Architects.

George Fytianos, Director of Sustainable Development at Alumil, shared the company’s efforts to responsibly manage natural resources and embrace environmentally friendly practices. He introduced Loop 60, Greece’s first certified recycled aluminium for architectural system profiles, made with 60% recycled material. Fytianos emphasized that Alumil’s strategic focus on sustainability has significantly reduced the carbon footprint of its systems, well below the EU average. He also underscored the company’s comprehensive ESG approach in achieving these results.

Marina Latcha, Quality Control and R&D Manager as well as Sustainability Coordinator at Elval Colour, outlined the company’s focus on two key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She explained, “Our primary focus is on SDG 11, ‘Sustainable Cities and Communities,’ through the promotion of innovative materials like high-reflective paints for facades and roofs (Cool Roofs) that mitigate urban heat islands, as well as self-cleaning paints. Additionally, our commitment to using safe building materials, such as slow-burning products, supports SDG 3, ‘Good Health and Well-Being,’ by enhancing occupant safety and reducing the risk of fire spreading to neighboring buildings.” She emphasized that achieving ambitious sustainability goals requires more than isolated efforts by individual stakeholders in the construction sector. Instead, she advocated for coordinated partnerships in the design and construction of new buildings.

In conclusion, coordinator Ivi Dikaiou emphasized that ESG principles play a vital role in fostering synergies and driving innovation. She explained, “ESG ensures that each project is evaluated for its environmental impact, social contribution, and governance quality. Sustainable practices are most effective when stakeholders collaborate with transparency, accountability, and a shared vision.” She further noted that ESG not only inspires partnerships but also strengthens them, enabling the construction and architecture industries to advance Goal 17 by embracing responsible practices that positively impact both the planet and communities.

 

Opportunities and challenges in accelerating circular and sustainable construction

On November 13, the discussion “Opportunities and Challenges in Accelerating Circular and Sustainable Construction” took place, moderated by journalist and ypodomes.com founder Nikos Karagiannis.

Pieros Pieris, architect and partner at Pieris.Architects, highlighted the importance of a holistic approach to sustainable architecture. He emphasized that sustainability extends beyond constructing new buildings to include the reuse and revitalization of existing structures. Pieris argued that a building’s sustainability is inherently tied to its surrounding environment. He explained that his firm’s philosophy prioritizes integrating all facets -reuse, selection of eco-friendly materials, and ESG practices- to ensure that architectural design makes a meaningful contribution to sustainability.

Alexandra Togia, CEO of the Hellenic Recycling Organization (EOAN), shed light on the ongoing efforts to establish comprehensive recycling systems, particularly for demolition materials, to facilitate their reuse rather than disposal. While acknowledging progress, she noted that recycling rates remain low and emphasized the need for stronger institutional frameworks and clearer regulations. Togia also addressed a key challenge: recycled materials cannot always be reused in their original form or retain the same value.

Evangelia Glezakou, Senior Sustainability Manager at Dimand, highlighted the company’s commitment to constructing buildings that adhere to stringent ESG criteria and achieve certifications such as LEED and WELL. She explained that Dimand’s philosophy centers on shaping the environment through sustainable practices with a strong focus on the end user. Glezakou emphasized that WELL certification prioritizes the health and well-being of the people who live and work in these buildings, ensuring optimal conditions for their comfort and welfare.

Vassilis Iakovou, Head of Concrete Activity at Hercules Group (part of Holcim), discussed the company’s recent innovations in environmentally friendly concrete products. He noted their ability to deliver specialized solutions tailored to customer needs, including custom concrete products for large-scale structures. Iakovou also highlighted The Spot project, which utilizes 3D robotic concrete printing (3D Concrete Printing) to advance sustainable building practices. This technology reduces material usage by up to 50%, exemplifying resource efficiency. The architectural design for this project was led by Pieris.Architects as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.

Finally, Ivi-Hara Dikaiou, founder of Cosmos ESG & CSR Consulting, emphasized that ESG is not a fleeting trend but a lasting and evolving framework with profound implications for the construction industry, particularly its focus on people. Dikaiou highlighted examples of best practices across the three pillars of ESG and stressed that the role of a sustainability consultant goes beyond theoretical declarations. It demands actionable statements backed by data, targets, and metrics to promote transparency and accountability for all stakeholders.

ΚΑΜ, Chania

The Centre for Mediterranean Architecture is hosting the exhibition “Un-natural Mat(t)erial—Unnatural Natural Material and Matter” from July 3 to July 18, curated by architect Andreas Theodoridis. This exhibition challenges conventional views on architecture, matter, and materiality, questioning the distinction between “natural” and “artificial” materials. The term “natural” can be misleading, often ignoring the intricate processes of extraction, processing, and disposal of materials, and failing to consider the complex realities of the built environment. “Un-natural Mat(t)erial” advocates for a more nuanced approach, where material categorization is based on factors such as energy consumption, embodied energy and carbon footprint, life cycle properties, emissions during production and application, and other relevant measures. The exhibits and lighting installations, created by Lola Ben Alon, Ezio Blasetti, Thomas Doxiadis, Yael Erel, Athena Papadopoulou, and Christian Pongratz, are organized into three thematic sections. Following its run in Crete, the exhibition will continue its journey to Athens and New York.

Triantaros, Tinos

An exhibition of works by the renowned Greek artist Sotiris Sorogas, created especially for the island, will be inaugurated on July 20 at the “Aspalathos” residence in Triantaros, Tinos. Sorogas, one of the greatest living Greek painters, has cultivated an organic relationship with Tinos, visiting the island regularly for almost half a century. This summer, a ruined windmill is brought to life through the eyes and hands of the artist in a house that celebrates art and shares it uniquely with the island’s friends, both Greek and foreign. This exhibition is perhaps the most “personal” of the many Sorogas has held -a tribute to the island that continues to inspire him. It offers a chance to share memories and discuss his enduring relationship with Tinos. Visiting hours are from 18:15 to 21:00, daily, and the exhibition will run until August 10.

iF DESIGN AWARD 2025

Following the great success of the iF DESIGN AWARD 2024, registration for the iF DESIGN AWARD 2025 is now open. In the Early Bird phase until June 28, designers, companies, agencies, clients, architects and interior designers as well as start-ups from all over the world can have their design achievements reviewed by an international, independent jury of design experts. Architectural Event on Colour

The architectural event “Material Matters Vol. 5: Colour“, organized by ek magazine under the auspices of the Hellenic Institute of Architecture, concluded successfully on May 27, 2024, at the atrium of the Benaki Museum, Pireos Street. The event attracted numerous professionals from the fields of architecture and design, who explored the importance of color in architectural design through thematic presentations.

The event was opened by Athanasios Tsoumalakos, General Manager of Eastern Europe and President and CEO of Ideal Standard Greece, representing the Platinum Sponsor. He was followed by Spyros Katopodis, Commercial Director of Elval Colour, the Gold Sponsor.

The first speaker was Marika Mavroleon of A&M Architects, who discussed the psychological significance of color in design through examples from her office and other architects. Following her, Katerina Apostolou of AKA Apostolou Colakis Architects spoke about the geometry of color. Petros Tavaniotis of Betaplan presented various color applications in healthcare and welfare buildings. Katerina Kourkoula and Hannes Livers Gutberlet discussed the use of color in selected projects, while Minos Digenis of Minos Digenis Arquitectos analyzed how color contributes to creating experiences from an architectural to an urban scale. Giannis Karachalios of Plaini and Karachalios Architects explained the rules of applying color in his office’s projects. Miltos Kontogiannis of Studiomateriality highlighted the importance of architectural color from the perspective of branding and communication. Maria Tsaftari of Urban Soul Project reviewed recent buildings and interior designs of her office, and Vana Krimnioti presented a series of journal notes on architecture and space, focusing on colors and their multiple connotations. The event concluded with a presentation by the keynote speaker, Dimitris Antonakakis, who, through carefully selected projects, showcased intriguing aspects of his research on color in architecture conducted by Studio 66, offering invaluable insights to attendees.

The 5th architectural event of the “Material Matters” series, organized by ek magazine, will take place on Monday, May 27, 2024, in the atrium of the Benaki Museum (138 Pireos Street).

The aim of the “Material Matters” series is to highlight the significance of various contemporary and traditional materials in Greek architectural and construction practices. Through theoretical approaches and built works of Greek architects, the events focus on exploring the history and characteristics of each material and their application in the evolving landscape of architecture, influenced by economic and technological advancements.
Material Matters Vol.5 is dedicated to a key feature of spatial configuration in architecture: Colour.

The application of color in architecture significantly impacts our perception of space by enhancing depth, intensity, and the significance of specific surfaces, volumes, and details. The exhibition ‘A Future for the Past’ is part of a 2-year programme that aims to raise awareness about marble craftsmanship at the island of Tinos. The programme, in collaboration with marble atelier on•entropy and curator Maria Cristina Didero, brings together traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design and aims to showcase how their dialectic relationship can contribute to both social and economic sustainability.

Marble sculpting in Greece carries historical significance, as it is an art practiced for millennia and intertwined with the Greek cultural heritage. At the same time, today it can constitute a potential factor for social progress.

The research program, part of which is this exhibition, highlights precisely this aspect. Through kinaesthetic knowledge preserved across generations, the art of marble sculpting contributes to the strengthening of societal bonds within the villages of Tinos. Values such as the sense of belonging and the collective identity are brought to the forefront and consequently the quality of life improves. Especially during a period of intensive touristic development and gentrification at the island of Tinos, the empowerment of such values is more critical than ever.

The presentation of “A Future for the Past” at the Benaki Museum follows the successful installation at the international design hub in Milan and precedes a festival of marble craftsmanship at Tinos. The installation at Benaki Museum provides a unique opportunity for the museum’s contemporary greek marble exhibits to engage in a dialogue with the creations of tinian marble sculptors. These, in turn, will converse with a sculptural contemporary design object made by tinian marble sculptors.

Implemented with a hands-on, modern, inclusive and sustainable approach, this is an innovative synergy. It brings together the local and the international, and the traditional with the contemporary in the specific field of craftsmanship. The aim is that both, contemporary design and historic marble sculpting, can continue sustainably to the future, making Tinos a recognizable hub of cultural wealth.

On Thursday, May 30, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. at the JUADN, 20 Academias Street, the English edition of Dora Theodoropoulou’s book FIX 120+YEARS OF ARCHITECTURE Takis Zenetos, Margaritis Apostolidis A Turning Point in the History of the Fix Building, published by EPICENTRO will be presented.

The results of the ECCA Coated Metal Awards 2024, honoring the best applications of painted metal elements in contemporary buildings in Greece and Cyprus, were announced on April 30th. Organized by the European Coil Coating Association based in Brussels, the competition received 45 entries, marking great success in showcasing innovation and sustainability in solutions with painted metal in architecture and design.

The selection of projects occurred in two phases, with the shortlisted projects presented by their architects to the jury at a special session held on April 23rd at The K Project venue in Kifissia. The jury comprised Yvonne Barcelona, Managing Director of ECCA; Christophe Perin, VP Global Marketing of Beckers; Alexandros Zomas, Board Member of the Hellenic Institute of Architecture; Pavlos Feraios, Member of the Cyprus Architects Association; and Nikos Patsavos, President of the Department of Architecture at the University of Ioannina. The jury awarded three prizes and one commendation across three categories based on project size.

In the S category, for projects up to 500m², the Bioaroma Museum and Experience Store in Agios Nikolaos, Crete, designed by KAAF Architects, received the award. The building integrates natural materials, predominantly local stone, with painted metal elements such as the double door entrance, showcases, canopy, and outdoor furniture. The choice of colors blends the project with its environment, referencing the ground and local flora.

In the M category, for projects between 500-2,000m², the Residences 316 housing complex in Engomi, Nicosia, by Constanti Architects, was awarded. The building, balancing between the urban development pace of Engomi and the desire for privacy, features a combination of solid and perforated metal panels in different colors on its façade, expressing the unique, dual character with a continuous, flexible surface.

In the L category, for projects larger than 2,000m², the renovated Piraeus Tower, designed by PILA, received the award. The project is characterized by design innovation and practical implementation, achieving not only aesthetic superiority but also sustainability. Challenges arising from the existing structure were skillfully addressed, combining the design requirements of a multi-story building with architectural creativity, resulting in a new, iconic landmark.

In the same category, an honorable mention was awarded to The Orbit office building in Athens, by LC Architects, for the refined application of its metal elements, appropriately adapted to redefine an existing building, setting new standards for urban architecture, and enhancing the aesthetics and environment of the city.

The awards were held under the auspices of the Hellenic Institute of Architecture, the Association of Greek Architects, the Cyprus Architects Association, with Elval Colour sponsoring the awards. The coordination, supervision, and design of the event’s visual identity were undertaken by ek magazine.

The ECCA Coated Metal Awards 2024, targeting professionals in architecture and design from Greece and Cyprus, are an initiative of the European Coil Coating Association. The awards aim to highlight the best-executed applications of coated metal elements in architecture, raising awareness about their significant environmental and aesthetic advantages.

Open Call for Entries

ECCA extends an open invitation to architects and designers to submit proposals of completed projects showcasing creative applications of coated metal, without any participation fee. Projects, encompassing architecture, interior design, or art installations, can be submitted under three categories: Small projects up to 500m², medium-sized projects from 500-2000m², and large projects exceeding 2000m².

Prizes and Recognition

For each category, a cash prize of €2000 will be awarded, with the possibility of additional Honorable Mentions without monetary rewards. Submissions are accepted digitally on the ecca-awards.com website, with a deadline of March 31.

Evaluation Criteria and Jury

The evaluation committee, comprising representatives from ECCA and architects, will assess projects based on their aesthetic dimension, design methodology, application innovation, and project sustainability. The jury members include:

The architectural event, “Synchronicities: The Architecture of Rena Sakellaridou,” concluded with great success on December 15th at the SNFCC Lighthouse. Celebrating the remarkable journey of Rena Sakellaridou, the event, organized by ek magazine under the auspices of the Hellenic Institute of Architecture, proved to be a well-executed and insightful celebration.

Rena Sakellaridou, an influential figure in Greece’s architectural landscape, is a professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and a founding member of SPARCH architectural office. Currently leading the RS SPARCH office, her extensive portfolio includes individual and collaborative projects across various architectural categories and scales, earning accolades for its consistently high quality, both within Greece and internationally. Recognized in over 26 architectural competitions, her work has been showcased in 37 exhibitions, including prestigious venues such as the Venice Biennale, Milan Triennale, DAM Frankfurt, NAi Rotterdam, and RIBA. Notably, her buildings have been nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award and the arcVision Award for Women in Architecture.

The event began with a welcome address by Stavros Martinos, member of the Editorial Board of ek magazine. Ariadni Vozani, Managing Director of ek magazine, then delivered an introductory speech, offering insights into Rena Sakellaridou’s comprehensive body of work, covering architecture, education, and literary contributions. The monographic presentation within the book highlights Rena Sakellaridou’s “hybrid” role—simultaneously an architect, a professor of architecture, and an author—with a well-founded theoretical background. Rena Sakellaridou’s introductory statement, “all is one,” sets the tone for the works categorized into five distinct chapters. These chapters explore allegorical titles, navigating the realms of architecture, perceptual aesthetics, and conceptual-mental processes. Accompanying the presentations are brief autobiographical notes, providing nuanced perspectives on various aspects of her architectural journey.

The annual gathering of the tourism industry is set to take place from November 25 to 27 at the Athens Metropolitan Expo. There, hotel owners, industry professionals, investment firms, architects, construction experts, and digital specialists will meet with 500 top-market exhibitors, shaping the most dynamic community in Greek tourism. It’s a place where significant deals are made, and where new trends, innovative ideas, and applications are showcased, serving as tools for the demanding tourism sector’s healthy growth.

Xenia will also host the 11th General Assembly of the Hotel Chamber of Greece. As part of the exhibition, two special actions will be presented:

-ONEliving project: Given the constantly evolving and upgraded level of the offered hospitality experience, the architecture team of Costas Gagos Architecture & Design will present, for the first time, a groundbreaking concept within 380m² in the construction sector of Xenia in Hall 2. It’s a unique, prefabricated, stackable, portable building with a modern minimal appearance. It stands out for its impressive design, the alternation of materials, and atmospheric lighting combined with its functionality, equipped with the most intelligent space management systems. The entire concept will be complemented by a comprehensive landscape design, offering a unique experience to visitors.

-The Red Spot Stage: What are the technological advancements in hospitality? What is experience-driven design? What are the trends in construction and decoration? Architects, civil engineers, lighting designers will provide answers to these questions in the workshops of “The Red Spot stage” in Hall 2 and present case studies of resorts, boutique, and city hotels. During the speeches, the most significant design trends will be highlighted, focusing on matters related to renovation, energy conservation, soundproofing, landscaping, lighting design, and branding for modern hotel units.

The 100% Hotel Show is taking its next step as the Luxury Exhibition Event for Luxury Accommodations and Tourism Professionals. Accordingly, it is adapting its content and exhibition experience for the period of November 18-20, 2023, at the MEC Paiania.

Enjoy: In Quest of Pleasures

Maison & Objet, the leading interior design exhibition in France exclusively catering to professionals, is set to return to the Paris Nord-Villepinte exhibition center from September 7th to 11th. This year’s theme, “Enjoy: In Quest of Pleasures,” brings together original creations from the entire design spectrum, infusing joy and comfort into all aspects of daily life.

The main exhibition at Paris Nord-Villepinte, also known as the “IN Event,” provides a unique platform for information and networking in a physical space. The parallel event, Paris Design Week, encompasses numerous “OFF Events” at different locations throughout the city. Lastly, the digital platform, MOM (Maison & Objet and More), enables visitors to leverage the capabilities of digital technology to dynamically explore the exhibition’s contents.

As with each year, Maison & Objet bestows the prestigious “Designer of the Year” title. For 2023, the duo of Fine Muller and Hannes van Severen from Belgium has been selected for this honor. The award ceremony will take place during the exhibition in September. Additionally, the event will present the “Rising Talents Award” to seven young designers from France.

The exhibition at Paris Nord-Villepinte will be held in two main areas, featuring six thematic sections: “Share” in Hall 3, “Leisure” in Hall 3, and conferences, MOM, Light Trend, Interior Studio, Business Meetings, and more in Hall 6. Reservations in advance are required for attendance.

The launch of the new issue of the Japanese architecture magazine “a+u” dedicated to Point Supreme Architects (Marianna Rentzou, Konstantinos Pantazis), is taking place on Thursday, June 15th 2023 at 19:30 at Hyper Hypo bookstore in Athens.
It is the first time that such an important international architecture publication dedicates a whole issue to a Greek architecture studio. The publication’s 168 pages present a selection of Athens Projects,  20 built projects and 5 texts by important colleagues who analyze the works. The presentation will be in Greek. There will be limited copies of the issue for sale. Concurrently, there will be an exhibition in the store’s project space underground, with photos of the works.
A party will follow.

Since 2019, ek magazine has launched Material Matters, an annual series of events underlining the importance of materiality in architecture. The fourth event was staged on Monday, May 29th, at the Benaki Museum Atrium, and was dedicated to light, an “immaterial” architectural component which is, however, crucial to a complete, lived experience of the built space and its materials.

Several architectural works -realized or unbuilt- were presented at a full-house event at the Atrium, showcasing the significance of lighting in different ways, on various scales.
The opening talk was delivered by Christina Argyros of Neiheiser-Argyros Architects, on the visual extensions of space achieved by light in a recent housing renovation in London. Next, Stella Daouti of AREA Architects showcased creative uses of architectural lighting on many scales, from the domestic to the urban. Giorgos Fatseas, through a selection of projects realized by his office, underscored the importance of lighting in architectural design, stating that lighting is not something quantitative, but purely a matter of aesthetics; he further brought to attention the need of serious contemplation upon the triplet of architecture, light, and aesthetics. Landscape Architects Panita Karamanea and Thanassis Polyzoidis -Topio 7- presented case studies of architectural lighting in their own work. George Atsalakis of Scapearchitecture discussed projects realized by the office, in which linear architectural lighting augments geometry and spatial perception. Lighting designer Athanassios Danilof -DANILOF light+perception studio- featured a panorama of good practices, juxtaposed to common errors committed in the recent past. Architect Costantis Kizis of Kizi Studio elaborated on creative lighting experiments in two important public buildings in Greece: The Silversmithing Museum of Ioannina, and the «Pallas» Theater in Athens. Lighting designer Aris Klonizakis -LAStudio- elaborated on how lighting, thorough abstraction, brings to life the freshness of original architectural ideas. Tsambikos Petras -Petrās Architecture- described the perception of light from the viewpoint of a practicing architect, laying the ground for collaboration with specialized lighting designers. Finally, architect Memos Filippidis of mplusm closed the event with a fascinating mapping of architectural creativity, grounded in lighting design.

On Monday, May 15th, the big gala of this year’s iF Design Awards took place. In an impressive ceremony at the Friedrichstadt-Palast theater in Berlin, the heart of the global design industry beat with 1,500 guests (business, politics and media representatives) from 42 different countries. This marked the 69th award ceremony of the German organization iF, based in Hamburg, which honors top achievements in various design categories, including architecture, interior design, industrial design, product design, communication design, User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) among others.

With almost 11,000 entries (submitted projects for evaluation) from 56 countries just for 2023, the iF Design Awards are among the largest and most significant design competitions in the world. The jury, composed of 133 independent design experts from diverse backgrounds and hailing from 20 different countries, conducted a two-stage selection process and ultimately awarded 75 Gold iF Awards during the ceremony. In total, 2,104 entries from 47 countries were honored with the iF Design Award.

Uwe Cremering, CEO of iF International Forum Design GmbH, who is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the iF Design institution this year, expressed gratitude to the international design community: “It is really great to be able to celebrate together with the award winners their special success! They can be justifiably proud of themselves and their projects, which show an excellent cross-section of current design developments! We too are proud and at the same time very grateful for the trust our participants have placed in us for seven decades. This year alone, we have been able to attract ten percent more participants than in 2022, especially from Germany, the USA and other European countries. With this design gala, we would like to close a very successful iF DESIGN AWARD year -and at the same time start the new award year! We are excited and look forward to the next innovations!”

The Pritzker Architecture Prize presents The Role of Practice, the 2023 Laureate Lecture and Panel Discussion, on Tuesday, May 23rd at 3:40PM EEST, in partnership with the National Technical University of Athens, and with the participation of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Patras and Technical University of Crete.

Sir David Alan Chipperfield CH, 2023 Laureate, will reflect on the role, responsibilities and opportunities of architectural practice. He will consider how architecture has been dominated by market forces and become increasingly detached from its place, just as the challenges of climate crisis, loss of biodiversity and social inequality have heightened the urgency for a more proactive position.

“We see architecture as a result, the physical object, and we try to measure architecture by this result. But our concerns cannot only be focused on what we build. We must look at the way we build, how we build, who we build for, and where we build. It is only by going beyond the prescribed responsibilities of architectural practice, by questioning the limits within which architecture operates, that we can properly respond to the existential issues that confront us,” elaborates Chipperfield.

Alejandro Aravena, Jury Chair and 2016 Laureate, will introduce the architect, who will also present an overview of the work of David Chipperfield Architects, with a focus on common concerns and attitudes towards process and purpose. Additionally, drawing from experiences with Fundación RIA, his non-profit think tank in Galicia, Spain, Chipperfield will call for architects to evolve new ways of practice that advance the common good.

A conversation between Chipperfield, Francis Kéré, 2022 Laureate, and Anne Lacaton and JeanPhilippe Vassal, 2021 Laureates, will follow, as they each reveal the successes and failures of their respective journeys that effected their architectural philosophies and works, and led them to the shared stage of the present.

“On the surface, my architecture may seem to people very different from that of my peers in the field,” comments Kéré. “But I think we have more in common than we have differences: an effort to build things that last and have an impact, a design language that is distinct but can adapt to users, a love for architecture and its potential.”

David Chipperfield is the 52nd Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize and resides in London and leads additional offices in Berlin, Milan, Shanghai and Santiago de Compostela. In Greek mythology, Mnemosyne was the Goddess of Memory and mother of the nine Muses who were originally patron goddesses of poets of the oral tradition. Therefore, we aspire to enhance the concept of “Ideas Worth Spreading” by bringing the importance of passing down knowledge, into the spotlight.

TEDxNTUA will take place – for the second time – at Athens Conservatoire, a venue distinguished for its aesthetic and architecture. Athens Conservatoire was founded in 1871 and it is the oldest educational institution for the performing arts in modern Greece. Festival performances and events

Today, Rolex announced that multidisciplinary performances, exhibitions, readings, screenings, installations, and discussions will share the achievements and ongoing creative relationships of more than 60 Rolex protégés and mentors. It will fill stages, galleries, and public spaces at nine venues in Athens – the cradle of arts and learning – for a full week in spring 2023 with more than 30 performances and events, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. The Rolex Arts Festival, spanning dance, theatre, music, film, architecture, visual arts and literature, and showcasing a generation of outstanding international artists who have advanced their work with the support of Rolex, will be presented to the public from 26 to 28 May. A special pre-festival programme, dedicated to the people of Athens and organized to engage Greek artists, arts professionals and young people, will be offered from 22 to 25 May.

In presenting a dazzling array of works by the Rolex fellows (former protégés) from 26 to 28 May, as well as public conversations among the fellows and acclaimed mentors – many living legends – the Rolex Arts Festival seeks to inspire those in the Greek capital at the heart of the world’s culture. The festival will also be a vivid demonstration of the commitment to reach for the pinnacle of performance that drives Rolex to support individuals and organizations in the arts. This continuous pursuit of excellence, symbolized by the word ‘Perpetual’, underpins every aspect of Rolex’s activities – from its watchmaking to its many partnerships.

In keeping with this mission, the pre-festival programme presented from 22 to 25 May will feature the participation of dozens of Greek artists in 14 free public and professionalevents. A distinguished eight-member Greek Advisory Committee has provided counsel and assistance in organizing all aspects of the Rolex Arts Festival, which is being curated by independent arts advisor and programmer Emma Gladstone OBE, former Artistic Programmer at Sadler’s Wells in London and former Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Dance Umbrella.

“To bring the public just some of the wealth of multidisciplinary achievements that have been fostered by the Rolex mentoring programme, we issued an open call to all Rolex fellows to participate by presenting works,” said Rebecca Irvin, head of the mentoring programme at Rolex. “The response was overwhelming and unanimous. We at Rolex are moved and excited by the outpouring of creative energy and the spirit of communal engagement that the fellows will be offering in Athens.” Gladstone commented, “There is astonishing generosity in the range of work that the Rolex fellows will be showing the people of Athens – a generosity matched by the invaluable relationships that the mentors formed with these fellows, and by the contributions of Rolex in initiating and supporting this special endeavour. To honour this generosity across the 20 years of the Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, the Rolex Arts Festival will highlight three broad themes: the relationship of sharing at the core of the programme, the impact of this sharing on the fellows, and the ongoing artistic legacy that the fellows are now creating around the world.”

Highlights of the Rolex Arts Festival

Events and presentations in the Rolex Arts Festival will be offered to the general public at minimal cost, with ticket proceeds going to the partner institutions for their arts programmes.
The activities will include:

• A group exhibition at EMST (National Museum of Contemporary Art) by the eight Rolex visual arts fellows – Sammy Baloji, Alejandro Cesarco, Masanori Handa, Nicholas Hlobo, Mateo López, Thao Nguyen Phan, Camila Rodríguez Triana and Matthias Weischer – with an introductory talk moderated by mentor Carrie Mae Weems.

• A group exhibition at Benaki Pireos 138 of work by all Rolex architecture fellows – Sahel Alhiyari, Gloria Cabral, Mariam Issoufou Kamara, Simon Kretz and Yang Zhao – with an introductory talk moderated by mentor Sir David Chipperfield.

• A screening in the courtyard of Benaki Pireos 138 of short films by Rolex arts fellows Aditya Assarat, Kyle Bell, Sara Fgaier, Annemarie Jacir, Josué Méndez, Celina Murga, Agustina San Martín, Tom Shoval and Chaitanya Tamhane.

• Two theatrical presentations: The Case of the Stranger by Rolex arts fellow Whitney White at the Athens Conservatoire, with a post-show talk featuring Rolex mentor Phyllida Lloyd, and [÷] v.0.8: Boléro, a solo performance at Ω2 Complex by arts fellow Sebastián Solórzano Rodríguez.

• Two dance events at the Athens Conservatoire: a performance by Rolex arts fellow Khoudia Touré with an ensemble of Greek and international dancers, and a double bill featuring arts fellow Eduardo Fukushima in a solo performance and a duet choreographed by fellow Myles Thatcher.

• Two music events: a sound installation performance at Megaron’s Trianti Hall Side Stage by Rolex music fellow Ben Frost, and a closing concert at Megaron Gardens featuring ensembles from Egypt, Honduras and the UnitedStates led by fellows Dina Elwedidi, Marcus Gilmore and Aurelio Martínez, with a guest appearance by mentor Gilberto Gil.

• Four installation works at the Athens Conservatoire by Rolex fellows Selina Cartmell (theatre), Matías Umpierrez (theatre), Federico León (theatre) and Jason Akira Somma (dance).

• A music commission and performance, Artemis: Fountain, created for the Dancing Fountains at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, by Rolex music fellow Pauchi Sasaki.

• A Word in Your Ear: writings by all Rolex literature fellows – Naomi Alderman, Antonio García Ángel, Edem Awumey, Colin Barrett, Julían Fuks, Julia Leigh, Miroslav Penkov and Tracy K. Smith – read in English and Greek by noted actors, introduced at a presentation in the Athens Conservatoire Amphitheatre and available for digital download throughout the Rolex Arts Festival.

Additional events

Two special “Sideways Mentoring” events will show how Rolex fellows are now inspiring each other and working in collaboration across disciplines. At Ω2 Complex film fellow Annemarie Jacir and literature fellow Colin Barrett will present a film script they are developing, with selected scenes interpreted by actors. At NewStage, Maya Zbib (theatre), Lee Serle (dance), and Mateo López (visual arts) will present Listening to the Walls Wear Off Their Colour, a dance theatre performance they have created.
Public discussions presented throughout the Rolex Arts Festival will be:

• New Legacies: Four fellows (names to be confirmed) in a conversation about the social, cultural, and ecological impact of their creative work.

• Creative Alchemy: Three fellows and three mentors (names to be confirmed) in a conversation about the elusive yet essential qualities that spark a creative relationship, moderated by Orestis Andreadakis, Artistic Director of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival.

• Lifelong Learning: Three established artists (names to be confirmed) who have guided and inspired fellow artists, sharing reflections and memories about the people that influenced them in their own lives.

The Rolex Arts Festival will also include a Gala evening at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, where the 20th anniversary ceremony will feature performances by music fellows David Aaron Carpenter, Vasco Mendonça and Susan Platts, with music fellow Josep Caballé Domenech conducting the El Sistema Greece Youth Orchestra, and the participation of the Greek women’s a capella
ensemble Chores.

The Pre-Festival Programme to the Rolex Arts Festival

Leading up to the Rolex Arts Festival, the four-day pre-festival programme (22–25 May) will include day-long workshops, masterclasses, public talks, musical performances and rehearsals, and more, involving dozens of Greek artists, Rolex fellows and mentors including Anne Lacaton, Phyllida Lloyd, Robert Lepage, Walter Murch and Colm Tóibín.
The Advisory Committee for both the festival and pre-festival programmes consists of: Eleftheria Deko (cross-disciplinary artist working in lighting design for performance, architecture and art), Katerina Evangelatos (Artistic Director of the Athens and Epidaurus Festival), Sofia Exarchou (writer-director of the 2016 awardwinning film Park), Katerina Gregos (Artistic Director of EMST, the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens), Alexandros Drakos Ktistakis (drummer, composer and orchestrator), Euripides Laskaridis (choreographer/performer, founder of the Osmosis company), Ilias Papageorgiou (architect, founder and principal of the PILA studio) and Kostas Spatharakis (editor, translator and founder of Antipodes Publications).

ABOUT THE ROLEX MENTOR AND PROTÉGÉ ARTS INITIATIVE

Established in 2002 to assist in the transfer of knowledge from one generation of artists to the next, the mentoring programme is based on the belief that art is a continuum, an accumulation of past experiences over generations, and that all artists are inspired by those who went before them. In keeping with the Rolex tradition of encouraging individual excellence, younger artists of exceptional promise – the protégés – are given the rare opportunity to spend significant periods of time in creative exchange with world-renowned artists in their particular field – the mentors – on a one-to-one basis. The programme today encompasses the disciplines of architecture, dance, film, literature, music, theatre and visual arts. There is also a variable, or “open category”, mentorship that can take place in other fields or in an interdisciplinary pursuit. These mentorships are grouped in alternating periods according to discipline.

On Friday, December 16, there was full house at the “Faros” Hall of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, at the event jointly organized by ek magazine and the Hellenic Institute of Architecture, to celebrate the legacy of the pioneering Greek architect, Takis Ch. Zenetos (Athens, 1926-1977). The day of the event further saw the launch of the new book by ek Architectural Publications, titled “Takis Ch. Zenetos, 2022: Archival Material and Critical Essays”, edited by Ariadni Vozani and Elias Constantopoulos; the book includes formerly unpublished archival materials, and original essays on his life and work.

This event on Takis Ch. Zenetos, architect of landmark buildings including the FIX factory on Syngrou Ave., and the Lycabettus Theater, was exceptional because it was the formal announcement by his family that his archive would be open to research. The archive, which will be gradually ordered, and will be available to researchers worldwide, will shed new light to a multifaceted architect which remains globally relevant. The few surviving buildings by Zenetos, despite their outstanding architectural quality, have been badly altered or destroyed. It is crucial that the family has all the support they need in curating the archive, to safeguard both the visionary design and the multilayered thinking of Zenetos on architecture and the world, which places him firmly on the international vanguard of the 20^th century.

Enthusiastic participation by the public, and the originality of the presentations, demonstrated that the interest in Zenetos’ work and personality remains high, even if he is one of the most widely published Greek architects: There are still many things that we don’t know.

Takis Zenetos passed away in 1977, at the peak of his creativity, having been one of the most daring, pioneering Greek architects. His realized and unrealized projects, from buildings and urban master planning to furniture design, stand out in their visionary approach; his work remains relevant, and it is an object of study among several Greek and international researchers. An early advocate of digital technology, Zenetos is -perhaps- a singular case, as an early member of the architectural “digital generation.” In the light of recent modifications in two of his most outstanding buildings (FIX Factory/National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens, and the Lycabettus Theater), his contribution to contemporary Greek architecture, and its significance, take center stage anew, soliciting fresh arguments.

Xenia Architect Lab Lectures

Xenia exhibition, aiming to offer a complete experience to the visitor, will host in the 2022 event a new innovative project, the “Xenia Architect Lab”.

“Xenia Architect Lab” is a structured installation of 800 m2, which will take place in Hall 2 and was implemented by a team of experienced architects, designers and technology advisors. The Architect Lab will include 26 exhibitor booths. In the specially designed booths companies that present innovations and modern technologies in the field of materials and construction will have the opportunity to get in touch with the very specific and targeted audience that includes architects, interior designers, decorators, lighting designers and engineers. 

Workshops & Case studies   

The project will also include a stage where workshops will be taking place during the three days of the exhibition Those workshops are structured around 3 main pillars (Tech, Design & Sustainability) and wish to create a point of reference for innovation and inspiration both for Architects as well as for the show’s visitors. There will be speeches from experienced and awarded architects and important representatives of the tourist industry from Greece and abroad. The aim is to present experiences and views that can significantly affect the future of the tourism industry and contribute substantially to the creative redesign of the Greek tourism product.

Since its first event, 100% Hotel Show has highlighted how important role Architecture and Design play in hospitality industry. These two absolute structural “materials” of a hotel, on the one hand, create spaces that attract with their aesthetics and functionality, and on the other, shape the hotels’ unique identity, an identity that is a success factor.

100% Hotel Show 2022 has already announced the Out of the Box… in a Box” Design Competition, which brings out the ability of architects to design the “unexpected”.  The contest’s goal is to gather, evaluate and  present architectural proposals characterized by the unexpected, unconventional and innovative. Elements that contribute to the formation of hotels with unique characteristics.

On the other hand, hoteliers who want to stand out and amaze the visitors, will get in touch with the competition proposals and be inspired to create their own amazing results, which will play such an important role to their unique “storytelling.

“Art & Design Gallery”: Hotel meets Art & Design

 100% Hotel Show 2022 will host for the first time one “Art & Design Gallery”, with Art Proposals & Design for Hotels, but also for luxury accommodation and villas. Through the exhibits of the “Art & Design Gallery”, the visitors of the Exhibition, will have the opportunity to “imagine” their own units being leveled up both in aesthetics and and in the ratings they will receive from their guests.

Architectural design in practice

For another year, 100% Hotel Show includes architectural proposals for specific hotel spaces (Reception, Lobby, Bathroom), in which selected architects, in collaboration with material and product companies, present complete spaces, with all the new trends both in terms of the image and operation of these spaces.

Through these proposals, the visitors of the Exhibition can get inspired, both for making unique and futuristic spaces and for the use of innovative materials and products.

Celebration of the Greek Hotel Architecture

The institution of the 100% Hotel Design Awards is happening again this year, with more participations than ever before and an even more upgraded level.

The big celebration of Greek hotel architecture, through which are highlighted both the most inspiring hotels and the talented architects who designed them, will once again take place in the Exhibition, both with hosting of the finalists of the Competition, and with the glamorous Award Ceremony of the 100% Hotel Design Awards, that will mark the Vip Opening of the Exhibition.

Strong presence of architecture in the workshops of the exhibition

Workshops are undoubtedly one of the most important pillars of the exhibition, becoming the most promising educational event in the hotel market.

An entire theme of this year’s workshops, entitled “Hotel Architecture Summit”, is dedicated to trends and new data, as well as companies and materials, related to the architecture, design and renovation/construction of hotels.

Η μεγάλη εκδήλωση της Ideal Standard στην Αθήνα, που πραγματοποιήθηκε την Τετάρτη 5 Οκτωβρίου στο Ίδρυμα Βασίλη και Ελίζας Γουλανδρή, έφερε μαζί αρχιτέκτονες και interior designers, με κεντρικό προσκεκλημένο τον διάσημο Chief Design Officer του Ομίλου Ideal Standard, Roberto Palomba.

Η Ideal Standard, κορυφαία εταιρεία στον σχεδιασμό του μπάνιου, αξιοποιεί την κληρονομιά της, που περιλαμβάνει εμβληματικά κομμάτια του ιταλικού design, σχεδιάζοντας τα βήματά της στη νέα εποχή, με τον συντονισμό και την καθοδήγηση του Ιταλού σχεδιαστή Roberto Palomba: Η αναγνωρίσιμη αισθητική της Ideal Standard ενσωματώνει πλέον τις πιο σύγχρονες τεχνολογίες και δίνει έμφαση στην περιβαλλοντική βιωσιμότητα.

Τη βραδιά της εκδήλωσης προλόγισε ο Γενικός Διευθυντής Ανατολικής Ευρώπης, Πρόεδρος και Διευθύνων Σύμβουλος της Ideal Standard Ελλάδας, κ. Αθανάσιος Τσουμαλάκος. Στην ομιλία του, υπογράμμισε τις δημιουργικές συνέργειες που αναπτύσσει η εταιρεία με αρχιτέκτονες και σχεδιαστές, καθώς επίσης και τις καινοτομίες που εισάγει στον σχεδιασμό της εμπειρίας των πωλήσεων στα δίκτυα διανομής της.

Στη συνέχεια ακολούθησε η παρουσίαση του Massimo Vismara, Vice President Brand Activation της Ideal Standard International. Κεντρικό του μήνυμα ήταν η δέσμευση της Ideal Standard προς τη χρήση ανακυκλώσιμων υλικών και βιώσιμων πηγών ενέργειας, στη δημιουργία καινοτόμων προϊόντων που έχουν σκοπό να συμβάλουν σε ένα καλύτερο μέλλον.

Ο Roberto Palomba ξεκίνησε την ομιλία του τονίζοντας τη διαχρονική σημασία της Ελλάδας στον χώρο του σχεδιασμού: Η κληρονομιά του κλασικού είναι οδηγός για το μέλλον. Εκφράζοντας τις δημιουργικές ανησυχίες της γενιάς του, τόνισε ότι το σημαντικότερο χαρακτηριστικό του καλού design είναι η διάρκεια και όχι το εφήμερο της μόδας. Αυτή είναι και η πολιτική της Ideal Standard την οποία διαμορφώνει ο ίδιος, ως Chief Design Officer.

Η ομιλία του ήταν ένα ταξίδι σε πόλεις-ορόσημα του design, όπως το Μιλάνο, το Βερολίνο, το Παρίσι, το Ντουμπάι και η Σαγκάη, με συνδετικό νήμα τις καινοτόμες και αισθητικά άρτιες Atelier Collections της Ideal Standard. Οι προσκεκλημένοι, στο κατάμεστο αμφιθέατρο, είχαν την ευκαιρία να δουν, πρώτοι σε παγκόσμια κλίμακα, μέρος των συλλογών που θα λανσαριστούν και στην ελληνική αγορά, το 2023.

Σημαντικό μέρος της ομιλίας ήταν η παρουσίαση του νέου showroom της Ideal Standard στη Λ. Κηφισίας 330 στο Χαλάνδρι, τον σχεδιασμό του οποίου υπογράφει ο ίδιος. H αναβαθμισμένη εμπειρία των πωλήσεων είναι κεντρικό στοιχείο της ταυτότητας της εταιρείας, με το showroom να μετατρέπεται σε χώρο πρόκλησης για δημιουργία και έμπνευση.

Μετά την ανάπτυξη της σχεδιαστικής φιλοσοφίας «Ethic & Aesthetic» του Roberto Palomba, ακολούθησε ξενάγηση στις συλλογές του Ιδρύματος Γουλανδρή, όπου οι καλεσμένοι είχαν την ευκαιρία να δουν έργα κορυφαίων εικαστικών, ενώ η βραδιά ολοκληρώθηκε με κοκτέιλ στην ταράτσα του νεοκλασικού κτιρίου του Μουσείου, με θέα την Ακρόπολη.

Την επόμενη μέρα, στο νέο flagship showroom της Ideal Standard στο Χαλάνδρι, που αποτελεί ένα από τα τέσσερα του ομίλου στον κόσμο -δίπλα στο Λονδίνο, το Ντουμπάι και το Παρίσι- ο βραβευμένος σχεδιαστής βρέθηκε ανάμεσα σε μέλη της κοινότητας του ΑΚΤΟ από το τμήμα interior design. Xenia 2022, which is to take place on November 26-28, is being prepared in a climate of optimism with the aim of once again being a key trade meeting point for the hospitality industry as well as a networking forum for hoteliers, tourism industry executives, architects, engineers, decorators, f&b managers, owners of rental rooms and villas.
