Residence in Kavala, Greece

The residence is located in northern Greece in the city of Kavala and is split into four levels. The idea A box on a base The design idea is divided into four distinctive parts: 1. The residence – a horizontal rectangular 2. The base – a wall enclosing the garden and the underground spaces 3. The tower – a vertical rectangular 4. The fence – a lower wall The mechanism The residence perceived as ‘a box of life’ is 25m x 9.5m x 9.5m and has the required pierces for sanitation. The largest side is focusing towards the view. This side of the box is removed in order to become a point to view the ‘outside’ but at the same time also to observe the ‘inside’. The south east wall is recessed by one meter to differentiate from the rest of the cell, creating a double height semi enclosed space. On the back side of this atrium all the everyday spaces of the residence are placed. On the lower level there are the private spaces which are also recessed additionally by two meters, creating small private gardens and patios for each room. The tower encloses the staircase and the lift which bond together all levels. The entrance and most public level of the house is the ground level. The substance The substance of the building follows the overall design attitude of the scheme. The residence is coloured in white, while the tower and the base are made in concrete. The light The use of natural lighting has been of principal importance on the design of the residence; sometimes to shade spaces and others to highlight aspects of its nature and beauty.
