The bilingual volume “Typologies of Feelings: Kokkinou Kourkoulas Architects and Associates”, featuring texts by AriadnιVozani and Yiannis Peponis, was published by ek Architectural Publications on the occasion of the event organized by ek magazine on December 13, 2024, at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. Designed by Typical Organization and curated by Andreas Kourkoulas, Katerina Kourkoulas, and Hannes Livers Gutberlet, the book captures the cultural imprint of the architectural firm from its inception in the late 1980s to the present.
This “cultural imprint” is a vital aspect of understanding the architectural work of Maria Kokkinou and Andreas Kourkoulas. Beyond addressing functional needs or even what is commonly perceived or interpreted as “aesthetic,” architecture inherently contributes to culture. The book reflects this cultural dimension through a primarily visual narrative, organized into five sections: Place, Vision, Stratification, Movement, Light. These thematic sections serve as a reading guide, highlighting the terms and dynamics that define the firm’s architectural composition.
Culture, as explored in this work, is intrinsically linked to a sense of refinement and the evocation of emotions capable of influencing, directly or indirectly, our daily lives. Through its visual and textual content, the volume invites readers to appreciate how architecture transcends mere utility, becoming a medium of cultural and emotional resonance.
